Unhappy Would you build on this? HELP! (pics)

Is this acceptable? I don't feel comfortable building this shortblock and every bone in my body is telling me to get it fixed. Sponsor input/motor guru advice would be appreciated!

what are those? casting flaws? look fairly deep;how deep are they? what are your plans, you staying NA or going N2O or boost?
I would be inclined to say re-deck the block, but that could also mean the pistons would then be way out of the hole.
if it is just a thou or 2 and no FI is planned you could probably get away with running as is.

I was planning on running a 200 shot at the most. I really don't like the scratch
accross the #4 cyl. It goes from the bore thru the water jacket and into the lifter area. With my engine bag on I can still catch my finger nail in the scratch.
Is this a common problem on iron blocks from the factory? I did not see them when I disassembled the motor.

I was wondering if a head gasket would even seal the combustion or if it will bleed into the cooling system?

A graphite type head gasket might seal, but a MLS most likely will not.

Well, if you just paid for this motor would you risk a "maybe"-I'm just trying to figure out what to do. This just sucks!

Since whoever built it most likley did it, I would have them dissasembale and deck the block. Going from the bore to the cooling passage to the lifter valley is just asking for trouble.

They said the marks were already there and that they are normal

Those marks are NOT normal... I don't care what anyone says, they're full of ****. Like you said, coming across #4 straight from the edge through the water jacket and to the cylinder, just ASKING for problems. Could pressurize the coolant system from the bottom and blow coolant out the top. I would STRONGLY recommend having that block decked, for safety's sake. Bring a piston to TDC and measure how much it sticks out of the hole, and figure if you can or cannot get away with taking more off the deck. Good luck!

The block is ABSOLUTELY going to have to be resurfaced! Any scratch that you can catch a finger nail on that goes all the way to the bore will leak combustion pressure. A scratch deep enough to feel on the block (or the cylinder head for that matter) over the fire ring (the circular portion of the head gasket just outside the bore designed to seal the cylinder) will leak!
I'm sorry the shop your dealing with would try and tell you that a scratch like that is normal! Did they see the same pics you have posted here? If so, they are the kind of shop that makes the rest of us look bad - OR maybe they make me look better for knowing what I'm doing and taking pride in my work verses worrying only about the almighty dollar! Good luck getting it straightened out!

Thanks for the help guys. I took the motor back and after they saw it they agreed to deck the block. Looks like everything will be worked out without too much drama

But I know how to handle drama
