I just bought and installed a forged 347ci LS1 shortblock from Texas Speed for 2700, give or take. It came with forged pistons, rods, the works, still stock crankshaft though. It's a ******* beauty. If you are serious about forged internals, I say just go with a brand new shortblock. It's money well spent if you plan on installing everything yourself.

The stock crankshaft is fine, probably good to around 550 to 600 hp. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

If stock old school 400's can run into 10's on a stock crank, I'll say ls1's are gos till at least the same...

Stock cranks have seen HP levels in the 4 digits. It can handle anything you can through at it.

There are numerous LS1's in the 8's and 9's running stock cranks.

As for parts in a forged short block: pistons, rods, rings, bearings, bolts.

I'd also add a new timing set and oil pump to the list if you want to do it right.

As for cost - $2,600 - $3,000 on the cheap side and $4,000 - $4,500 on the expensive side.

As with most things in life you get what you pay for - not all forged motors are equal.

I was looking into a forged bottom end myself on my 99 ta and was wondering if I could use my block with 113000 miles on it and does my block have to be bored?

Without the block doesn't EDPC (sponsor) or something like that? sell forged pistons, rods and i'm not sure what else...for like $900ish? And forged stroker kits also. As far as boring the block goes, i wouldn't think so but i can't honestly can't answer that. The Mahwe(sp?) pistons aren't any bigger are they? Question: When you buy a "forged block" are they just stock blocks that are heat treated or something (whatever makes the aluminum stronger) or are they a totally new block? sorry to hijack.

Forging is a process thats used before the metal is shaped into an engine block. Forged blocks exist in Top Fuel and tractor pull competitions, not anything anyone here could afford.

As for MAHLE pistons, they are offered in a variety of sizes, much like other piston manufacturers, to fit most applications. Unless your engine block is brand new or has VERY little mileage, your gonna want to hone the cylinders to straighten them out. Therefore, you'll need a larger piston to fit the larger bore.

One more thing, if you hone the cylinders out to 3.905" and buy some aftermarket 3.905" forged pistons, you'll get a paper in the box saying that you'll need .004" piston-wall clearance (roughly). DO NOT assume that the piston is 3.905" in diameter and hone the block to 3.909" to acheive that clearance. It's made to fit a 3.905" bore and has that .004" clearance already.

I would too. just the tools you need to build a shortblock would be 500 bucks or so

Let me rephrase that, i meant the "stock" forged ls1 pistons....if that makes sense lol. Thanks for clarifying though, i get what you're saying now. So noone actually uses a forged block, just pistons rods etc.? i was always under the assumption that some people on here had forged blocks also i guess, soo the stock aluminum blocks good to ______HP???

The stock aluminum Ls1/LS6 blocks can hold 1000hp, but there will be issues concerning the iron sleeves. The Iron blocks that came in the trucks have shown to be stronger, handling over 1600hp like in W2W's camaro.
