Default Timing chain dampner in the way?

Hey guys,

I have just finished uninstalling my heads and cam. Everything is off my car.

(I was suprised how easyily everything has gone so far )

I have a quick question about setting up the timing after the new cam goes in...

I have seen numerous guides that say to linge up the cam gear with the crank sprocket.. (Sounds good to me!)

but....... It appears on my LS2 there is a timing cahin dampner in the way...

Well here is a picture of what I am talking about:

(Number 232)

That part blocks me from being able to see the dot on the crank sprocket...

So after this longwinded post... my question for you is:

Do I need to take off the timing chain dampner in order to see the crank sprocket dot and properly set up the timing?

If so how do I take it off? It seems like the oil pump is in the way!

Thanks guys!

Here is a picture of my LS2 engine:

The blue are is the dampner

The red area are the bolts

See how it is blocking my view of the crank sprocket?

I've never dealt with LS2's, but from the picture it looks like the oil pump has to come off. The LS1's don't have the chain dampner, but I usually still pull off the oil pump just to get a real good look at the timing marks.

On second thought, is there enough room to remove the dampner with the pump still on? Can you remove the bolts with a ratcheting wrench and then pull the whole dampner up out of there? Or are the bolts too long to come out enough?

Yes, you do have to remove the oil pump to remove the dampner so you can access the two bolts. I did my LS2 402 from shortblock up, so I did the cam install and lined up the dots before I installed the oil pump and dampner. Call Matt from TTP (sponsor here) to verify, he has done done LS2 cam only installs.

Thanks for both your answers!

I was figuring I would have to take off the oil pump to get to the dampner...

1. I bet the bolts are to long.

2. I can't get a socket on them (And I dont want to risk round the head with a box wrench)

It will only take me a few extra minutes to take the pump off so no biggy for me!

Now I just gotta wait for my new cam to arrive

yes you have to take oil pump off to get dampner off. you dont have to put it back in. no big deal but the oil pump o-ring must be perfect when you put the oil pump on or you will lose oil pressure

I wouldn't run without the chain damper.

Your post saved me from a major headache down the road.....
I am building up a 408 for FI and have installed the QTP 2 piece timing chain cover and HV oil pump. I had the 6.0L block drilled for and installed the timing chain damper thinking I was being pretty smart. I was just about to install this back into my GTO when I ran across your post. You are absolutely correct, and that damper in place would have totally defeated the purpose of having the 2 piece timing chain cover. Although I hated to take her all apart again, it was an hour spent on the engine stand Vs many hours once installed in the car....Given the LS1 and the 6.0L didn't have these to begin with, I am hoping my Katech chain will hold up to the abuse...

Thanks for the enlightenment......

One more tip...Bolt the cam sensor back on BEFORE you put on the pulley, one of its bolts will not fit back in with the pulley in place, although it looks like it will, it won't. Ask me how I know

hahaha.

I had mine bolted on before I put the pulley on....

I also put a bead of high temp RTV (red) around it.... Just to make sure it would not leak oil...

Given that most of the time the reason to remove the front cover is to change cam, I do not see why you would need to remove dampener. If you can get cam gear on and off, remove top cam sensor bolt and see timing marks, why would the split cover not work?

Can't see the crank gear with the damper in place....
so aligning the "dots" becomes difficult at best.

Not sure what you are referring to about the cam sensor bolt....LS2????

I dissagree. I have had dampeners on both my LS1 and LS2.

On my LS2, there was no way to see the dot with the damper on. 2 piece cover won't work. I wish I took a pic

That pic is with out the oil pump... If you have a 2-piece cover I don't think You can see with the dampner on... It was hard enough for me to see with the cover completely off and the dampner on.....

Hey Bruce...

I blew into the PCV hose and I did not feel a lot of resistance... I did however get a VERY bad taste in my mouth Sorry it took so long to get back too you... I have been pretty busy!

this is the only view you have with the 2 piece. the damper is blocking the view of the crank gear.
