The symptom you describe could be as simple as a sensor unplugged all the way to a defective part. To avoid just buying parts to throw at it, I would suggest checking the diagnostic code first to find out where the ecu is reporting a problem.

Do you have a K&N air filter? Make sure none of the oils are on the MAF. I would clean it anyways and make sure it's pluged in.

Check the throttle posistion sensor. Also try resetting your computer. but a quick check that worked once for me when my 98 did that turn the key to on and push the throttle pedal to the floor then let it go turn the key off then try starting the car. I've heard it resets the TPS for calibration or whatever I dunno if its true but it worked for me s few yrs back.

It dies as if the battery gives up or as if it just won't start?

My shot in the dark would be fuel pump since you're not throwing codes. Might want to check your pressure at the rails to see what it's reading.
