Default CheaTR or TR224+tune?

Well I have been wanting a cam for a while, and I've narrowed it down to these 2 cams, the CheaTR or the TR224.

If I go with the CheaTR cam, I will only have enough for the $800 package from Thunder. If I go with the TR224 cam, I can get the $600 package and have money left over for a tune.

Now, I have SLP Lid, home ported TB, and TSP Rumbler catback - its a 1998 Trans Am WS6 M6. Which would get me more power, the CheaTR only or the TR224+tune?

Thanks
-Scott

tunes go a VERY long way... plus the lift on the CheaTR is mucho harsh... which is why im going w. the TR224 instead of the CheaTR... IMO atleast

My advice is two fold:

Get headers before you get a cam.

Get a tune as soon as you get a cam.

The tune is most important. Under no circumstances would I recommend getting a cam without some sort of real tuning.

the cheaTR cam is more designed for stock manifolds while giving you more throughout the rpm range and sounding stock like.... plus you should get a tune with either one

Yes, I realize that.

Given stock manifolds I would run the CheaTR before running a TR224, but only if it was going to be tuned...and I would still rather get headers first.

I am not a fan of either option, at all, and as such did not vote.

IMO getting a cam when you have stock manifolds and an LS1* intake manifold is not the best move. Doing so without a tune is even worse.

You love those header huh?

Just in my limited experience, if you can make do with the noise and cheaper headers, I would do headers and intake mani first.

If not I'd go with the CheatR

how much power can be made with the CheaTR with stock manifolds, ls6 intake, catted y, borla, lid, tb, maf, tune. And how much more would shorties give over stock manifold with same mods.

I ran stock manifolds with a 206/212 cam. Seems to have worked ok, I got into the 11s with it. If our track didn't close, my next mod was going to be headers. Now the headers are sitting in my shed. When trapping 112-113, I could really feel the restrictiveness of the stock manifolds. If you want to trap higher, do headers. If your goals are set lower, stock manifolds can get you there.

Pleeze get hedders before getting a cam. If you can scrape together $500 more then you can get pacesetter hedder and y-pipe combo from texas speed. Then go 224 with tune.

Not with stock manifolds and stock heads.

IIRC Pat G made 398 rwhp with a dead on tune and AFR 205s.

The CheaTR cam consistently gives 35-40 additional rwhp over the stock cam when running stock exhaust manifolds and cats. The lobes are not harsh, nor do they kill springs. Geoff Skinner has over 40K miles on his CheaTR cam with the same set of springs.

i'd say do headers - you can get some good hooker headers(coated), y-pipe for just over $600 shipped from Speedinc - i'd do that, then an ls6 intake, THEN a cam.
