So I just ordered my new motor and im trying to decide whether or not to go with an eagle 4" crank or a callies dragonslayer. The callies is about $500 more or so. Reason im debating is because ive read on numerous threads about the eagle's being hard to balance etc. The shop is saying that they have used many eagles and have never had any problems balancing them etc. Other people are saying to stay away from the eagle. What are your opinions?

 

What are you end goals with this project?

 

I am currently having a 408 built and LME is using an eagle crank for my setup. They say they have a lot of success with these eagle cranks.

 

I would gpo with what LME says, if they are building it and they don't have a problem, I wouldn't either. Granted I think the Callies is a better piece, but the eagle is not a bad piece.

 

Dragonslayer hands down.

 

Its a 436ci resleeved ls2. Goals are 600fwhp, and maybe a 100-150 shot.

 

Eagle unless you just have $ you want to blow.

 

The Dragonslayer is a better crank, but even the factory crank is good for 900 to 1000 hp. Bob

 

for your goals the Eagle is fine, we use Eagle cranks most of the time and have had no issues with them.

The Callies crank is a better crank no question about that, but is about a $500.00 upgrade. I have a Callies Magnum XL crank here at the shop and it is one sweet crank let me tell you. Weighs only 40#!!

For serious FI or N2O applications I would recommend Callies, but for NA street/strip cars Eagle is fine.

 

Callies is coming out with a Compstar version this summer per their website. Should be good quality with a reasonable price like the other Compstar products.

Everyone has their opinion, This is a get what you pay for situation.
Get what your machinist suggest. He will be the one that has to clean up and prepare to assemble. Your goals can be made with any ls crank available as long as the machine work is done right.

 

After talking to Ken @ eastside about this same topic, he has never seen any failure happen do to an eagle crank, and they've built alot of motors.. alot of motors. They have used eagle cranks in their race cars, and in motors that would see nothing but abuse. That being said, the motor that ken is building for me has an eagle crank in it, and if it made a differnence, I would have spent the $ on a better one.

Also, while talking to Eric Koeng @ hpe about cams and heads and whatnot, bottom end stuff eventually worked it's way into discussion, and he knows of some 6 second race cars runnign eagle cranks, ones that are making 1800 hp. He didn't say he felt good about that, but they also haven't had an issue, that being said I think the eagle crank for your goals will be fine, the $ you save, put it towards a better head/intake/cam setup, that will net you more gains then spending another 500 on the crank itself.

 

yes I look forward to this myself, the parts will be cast per Callies specs and then finished in house at the Callies/Compstar facility. I know the Compstar program manager and he is way picky and very knowledgeable.

 

i'm going through the same deal now for my 402ci. i have not had any of the top sponcers say anything bad about eagle cranks. i guess they did have a bad batch some time ago,but i also had a sponcer tell me how they had a bad batch of callies cranks too. it goes both ways. i'm going to give the eagle a try in my motor. goodluck to ya bro.
