What kind of CFM's do LS1 flow?

Default What kind of CFM's do LS1 flow?

The reason I'm asking is im just mentally comparing them to my car when I put the FRPP heads on it with possibly a P-51 intake. The heads ported should allow up around 280 cfm @ .550 maybe more. A port and polished Mustang Cobra does around 310 to 320 @ .550 in the heads. My only problem is finding and intake to match, all but the P 51 restrict the 4.6. liter GT's around 260 ish cfm's @ .550.

Note these are all intake flow numbers.
Also note im talking about FRPP heads not PI heads, that come from 99-04 GT's. Port and polish are around 217 to 223 cfm @ .550. A stock FRPP head flows around 215 cfm @ .550.

So what i'm asking is what does a stock LS1, LS2, and LS7 flow. And what do ported one's flow?

I know cubic inches help in power, but with my set up im saving for, with a built block, im lookin at 380 or so rwhp NA. Out of the 4.6, and Yes I know LS1 are capable of more, im not askin that im wondering about there airflow.

stock LS1s-- alot more than that.... LS6/2-- lots more than that...... ported LS heads--beyond the realm of your blue blooded comprehension.P.S. good luck gettin 380 rwhp from N/A 4.6(even 5.0 stroker). Not gonna happen...

Ok, even though you're Stang oriented I'll tell you the truth:


The LS1 heads flow in the 220's @.600" and the 243's will flow in the 240's @.600". CNC ported 243 castings flow in the 300 range @.600". (stock valves) 2.00/1.55

i have built a few engines in my day but i have to say it would be impressive if you got 380 rwhp,and if you did the little cubes would probably put a damper on your torque..Try it and see what happens,and keep us updated on any results.

Thx guys, SOHC v8's are hard to fund. My motor idea is around 13 grand, and thats if I bolt it togather.

As far as your shall comment. Cobra's port and polished boast around 300 CFM's. And 380 rwhp is achievable without even a race porting. KenB has one of the nicest NA GT's I know of so far. However, he's only playing with PI heads. I want FRPP heads, that flow stock what his probably flow ported (bit less but close)

I want to stay NA but there isnt to my knowledge an intake that can handle those heads ported. So I was thinking about the FRPP 6 lb boost intake supercharger.

Lastly, Anyone who strokes a 4.6 is a moron. You gain more torq, but lose top in horsepower. The 4.6 has a 3.55 in bore, and 3.54 inche stroke. To put this in perspective, a 351 winsor has the same stroke lenth. Yet, has 80+ more cubic inches. Now Big bore stangs? Ported one's see a solid 50rwhp from boring them to a 3.7 inch making them a 5.0. I was coming to this forum to make friends not enemies.

Take it easy, not looking for enemies,LOL. I still feel that even these 2valve motors your refering to are somewhat ragged edge/race builds. Do any of these 350+rwhp 2valves run on the street?For 13000 dollars, I'd retrofit an LS-1 into ANYTHING before dropping that loot on a 2valve/4.6 liter build,lol. And sure, 4valve heads are real nice, but with only 281 inches under them, they really need to be revved to take advantage of the flow capabilities.Bottom line,a used LS-1 with a decent aftermarket cam setup (springs etc.) and supporting boltons,you can have easy 380+rwhp, along with extremely flat power curves, for less than half the money your talking about(and under 6500 rpm). Just not sure how it'd sound through an H-pipe and some two chambered Flowmasters! Good luck dude...

Thx 99sprayjunkie. I like ls1, and probably some day i'll get one. Just for now, i'd rather play with this over head cam motors. Expensive yea, but man they scream. Plus my GT with me in it weighs less then a f-body lol. If I wanted a heavy car i'd buy an 04 cobra, which I probably will.

Dumping 13K in a 4.6L and hoping for 380rwhp.... riiiiggggghhhht.....

Why not get a LSX 7.0L and hope for 600 rwhp?

I keep leaning to buy a 04 Cobra or 03 Mach 1. One of those will probably be coming in a year. From looking at how much it would cost to build something like that, scares me really. When I could just buy the above two and be happy. Sorry about the numbers, i was getting a bit defensive. And I do love that 7.0 LS7. Saw one on the street a couple days ago.

Honestly, i've read about the warhawk and its thicker walls so it does bowl out around the pistons like the c5r blocks. I have been wanting to learn more about that block in general. 454 C5 just sounds hot.

Now you are thinking. I will help you with the Hooker Analogy.

Let's say you have $1000 to permanently buy a hoe (I know I'm messed up).

1. Do you start off with an ugly 300 pound skank (Rosie?) for $100 and spend $900 bucks trying to make her look better.
2. Do you start off with an average looking hoe (somewhat pretty in dim lighted areas when you have a good buzz) for $500 and spend $500 trying to make her look better.
3. Do it right the first time, buy the hot hoe (pick the scabs or leave 'em?) for $900 and spend $100 trying to make her look better.

If you pick 1 then you are like a ricer who buys a 1990 Accord and puts a wing on it, a WEAPON X Vteched intake, some chrome rims, a bdc12j whatever they call their engines, maybe a fart can or 3, etc etc etc. This car never had potential to begin with.
If you pick 2 then that is like what you are thinking about doing now. You are going to max out it's not very high potential pretty quickly.
If you pick 3 then you are smart. You get something like an 03/04 Cobra or LS1. You might not have as much money to mod it right away, but it has crap loads of potential.

That is the most drawn out and messed up analogy I have written in at least a week....

unless you really have the money to blow, might as well save it for the cobra since at least you would have more options at that point.

unless there is another movtive for spending so much money on a dohc engine that might not ever produce the numbers you want

Well said, thought I dont think there nothing wrong with modding any v8 regardless of the price. I heard rumors Ford might be putting out a 5.4 liter 370 hp Mach 1 or bullit in a couple years. NA of course. There's something with potential too.

But hey on your analogy, if you pick the hot ls1 girl, is she fat too? like fat and hot? like and ls1? just messin.

It's not always about maximum power. I've been there, done that with LS1's and I am still DAMN tempted to build a 2V or 4V. N/A there has been a 304ci stroker with ported FR500 heads ($$$, but '03/04 heads will match them), FR500 intake, and FR500 cams (SMALL cams...could run a lot more cam in that motor) that put down 470rwhp. Do you want to tell me even a 5.0 stroker won't break 380rwhp? And it's not a monstruous non-streetable race motor. 2V's haven't been quite that high, but for what it's worth, they shine under boost. How about the totally streetable 2V with a Kenne Bell 2.2 that put down 682rwhp in the last 5.0? That's not bad. It's all opinion...
