Default Best Oil to Quiet Clatter

My 02 WS6 with 31k miles has the typical engine clatter during the first couple minutes of running. In an effort to quiet it down a bit, I was wondering which oil / filter combination might help.

Right now I am running 0w40 Mobil 1 with a K&N filter. I know everyone is clamoring over GC 0w30, but do you think it would make a difference in the startup clatter noise?

I have an old 89 Crown Vic that has the same type of clatter at startup, but the noise was greatly reduced by moving to a combination of Purolator Premium oil filter and 5w30 Valvoline dino oil. So I am sure that some improvement can be made on the WS6 by switching oils...I'm just not sure what direction to head.

I tried the GC 0W30 and my piston slap got worse. I switched to Amsoil 5W40 and it has almost gone away on cold start up. It still does it on warm restarts for a minute. I considering trying the Amsoil 10W40 next. I also use the longer K&N filter I believ it is HP2006. Hope this helps.

I had this exact same experience. GC make my startup noise louder than even mobil1 5w30. I too am running amsoil 5w40 and it made a very noticable difference in motor noise. Im very happy with the amsoil. I was reluctant to spend the cash on the oil and go through the hassle of mail ordering it, but it was worth it I feel.

Thanks man...

The !Girlfriend mod wasnt much in terms of weight reduction, but it certainly quited things down considerably.

I somehow think the Mrs. would very much like to see you get rid of the girlfriend. Though if she didnt already know, theres a good chance shes gonna leave and take half your mod money.

I've run Mobil 1 0w40, and the GC (0w30 of course), and the GC to me was louder. It does protect the engine well (my engine oil analysis was good), but was a bit annoying to me. I've since gone to Amsoil's 5w40, and so far, I'm happy, but there is still some clattering. Just kinda the nature of the beast...although mine has been much louder since my oil cap breather was put on.

GC 0W-30 quieted down my engine real nice. only noise in my engine bay is from the belt tensioner.

My previous car was a DOHC Honda, which had enough valvetrain noise to wake the neighbors. I always used Mobil 1 0W-40, which is an awesome oil, but it wasn't enough to quiet the clatter when cold. Finally, I tried a MoDTP additive my Mugen, and the valvetrain clatter was gone. Instead of paying a mint for more additive, I just used Redline 10W-30 which has quite a lot of Mo in it already, and the engine is pretty quiet. I figure a step thicker Redline would have done the trick to quiet it down the rest of the way.... but then I got the firebird and can only dream of the quiet Honda...

+ royal purple 10w 30 got rid of the noise on my car completely, also runs smoother

- alil $ though. and the oil is actually purple - theres alot of hatred for purple stuff on our cars on this site (zex for example lol) but you cant see it so...

i also like amsoil, but i have yet to try it in my ls1.

Default answer from Amsoil

I posed this same question to the Amsoil technical support deptartment. This is the reply I received from them,

"In response to your inquiry, the very best AMSOIL for this engine is the 0W30 Series 2000 oil. It is recommended for year around use. The start up noise is best prevented through the installation of a Pre Charger, the AMSOIL AMK 02."

Do you aggree that their 0w30 Series 2000 oil is the best Amsoil for the LS1 engine?

Ummmm, while I cant comment directly, id say theyre just giving you a prewritten answer based on the suggested mobil 5w30 equivalent. Also, our startup noise is from the piston slapping back and fourth, so an oil precharger will not stop that, although it may help with valvetrain noise.

I would suggest the popular 5w40 euro stuff as there have been many many oil analysis done, invariably coming back with great results. Couple the hard evidence and testing with the countless satisfied customers, and you cant go wrong. Screw what the company suggest, and go with whats been a proven oil. Proven by regular car guys like you and me.

I honestly thought it said Pro-Charger at first read........

I then thought what a killer way to ignore noisey valves and piston smack.
A D1SC or something ought to do it.

My Jeep has the I6 in it. It has piston and valvetrain noise unlike anything. Sounds diesel compared to my LS1.
Believe it or not, Walmart Supertech 10-40 dino and it's quieter than ever. Weird. Werd; 8 bucks for 7 qts and a quieter Jeep!

I just turn up the radio over the Crain doubles in the Goat. Oil ain't fixin' that!!

I`ve been running mobil 5w40 truck and suv oil which seemed to help quiet down the valvetrain some, but I can`t find it any more. I can only find the 5w30 truck and suv oil, I don`t know if there is a difference between the 5w30 truck and suv oil and the regular mobil 5w30!
