We just installed a set of stg 2 heads on one of the cars and tested the 918s that came off. They had only lost 3-4lbs on the seat w/ over 10k+ miles. I would still replace any valvesprings at least once every 1.5-2 years though with any aftermarket cam though. The springs are not that expensive and not hard to change. Just look at it as routine maintance (i.e. brakes, spark plugs, etc...).

Thanks for the input Jason, I guess the TR cams are not out of the picture, they make incredible power. I will just have to decide on my own if it is worth changing springs more often.

Where are the rest of you MTI guys, Colonel, Nineball??

I am running the Hammer cam with mild ported heads, mostly just a valve job with 2.02 int valves installed. verry little done to the ports and am running very well for a full weight car that weighed 3682 at the thunder shootout and went 11.81 at 117 mph. and now running a best of 11.73 with a 1.73 60ft. and a best of 119.39 mph full weight. fully loaded t-top car

Out of all thoes cams, your gona have to raise your rev limit. Valve springs arent as big of a deal, its just on how hard you drive your car. Go with the 224, you wont regrette it.

Another vote for the C1 here. Time in sig was done w/o a pulley or LS6 intake, stock heads, at about 3425 raceweight

niphilli

Thank you for this post , its a great post and has alot of information .

well niphilli if you excuze me I want to talk about another cam , its not one of those cams you talked about em , and it will not give the same power that those cams will give , but I loved it and it was cool with me .

its CompCam 212/218 .522/.529 114 , my best with this cam and with stock heads was 11.61 @ + 120 mph and with M6 car . That was before near to 2 years .

Before a year now I've got my beat with heads and a larger cam , its in my sign. Wish me luck to get into 10s with 346 c.i. N/A

Thank you niphilli and good luck

That is a nice looking sleeper cam, and would definately be easy on the valve train. You sure did get some killer MPH, so I am sure you were making power, I will add this cam to the list above. Was this on just regular comp lobes or were they XE or XE-R lobes? Were you at full weight to get 120 MPH?

Good luck with 10's!

My vote is for the TR 224 on a 112lsa. This cam idles great. I have run a best of 11.94 @ 113 with some tuning left to go. This is on stock heads w/bolt-ons. I broke a 941 when I first installed the cam, but have had no problems out of the 918's.

You can't go wrong with any of those cams IMO. I run the B1 cam with 918 springs with probably around 15K miles on the 918s with NO problems.

I gained 31rwhp with STOCK tuning with the B1 cam in my A4 but have yet to dyno with tuning, since my local dyno sold out.

My ET's are in the sig and i still have yet to add the LS6 intake,ASP pulley,FT ram air or true dual X pipe exhaust. Im looking for 11.40s with my current setup with a good 60ft. along with 4.10s and looking for LOW 11s with the mods i don't have. I think in all out ET gains i gained a solid .3 tenth with the cam and tuning compared to my bolt on times but i also lost over a 100lbs off the car to make up the .1 difference between 11.96 bolt ons Vs. 11.56 cam only times. Hope i was of some help to you.

The B1 cam took one of my friends past 400 rwhp with stock heads, but there is no way it will be optimized with a stock limiter FYI.

What's up Nick, good thread you've got going here. I think you may need to bump up the rev limiter with all (except maybe the zo6 cam) of the cams you are considering to reach the cam's full potential. I've heard all good things about the hammer cam but I'd go with the TR 224 112 or 114. Let's be honest here, you know you are going to get a set of ported heads down the road and the TR 224 (and others) works well with stock heads for the mean time. As far as valvetrain wear, again, most of those cams (except maybe the zo6 cam) are gonna put some wear and tear on the valvetrain. Maybe jleews6 could hook you up with those heads and just have then fitted with a set of double springs, that might ease your concerns some. I was going to just do a cam before I decided on heads too and the TR224 112 was the cam recommended to me, along with the T1, C1, and C2 from MTI. I'm kinda partial to the TR 224 but I'm sure you'll be happy with any one of those cams

I installed my TR 224 114 LSA on saturday and it feels great. Definate pickup on power from about 2k RPMs to redline. This is still on stock tuning also. Idles great with the stock idle, no surging, and I'd say it is just as streetable as the stock cam. No real compromise that I can see.

I'll have to get it on the dyno and see what it does before and after tuning.

Thanks to all that replied to this thread. Sounds like most of these cams would work great on stock heads. I guess the only thaing that is not realistic is the stock Rev-limiter. In all my favorites are the B1 or T1 and the TR 224 on 112 or 114, only constraint being that the valvetrain would need more maintenence on the TR grind cams. I think I will probaly end up with a B1 and 914s.

What about the TR 227 224 114 lsa reverse split cam? Many C5ers are saying this is the best cam to install for stock heads C5. Would I be better off with the TR 224/224? What do you'll think? I'm about to order it so any information would be appreciated.

Don't rule out a 220 cam! I agree the 224 setup does make great power, but IMHO a 220 cam would probably drive really close to stock & still make good power. We have 220, 224, & 228 cams instock, but most of the time we sell a 220 for street vehicles.
