Default Which Engine to use as a base?

Hi Guys,
Firstly thanks for an excellent site.

I am about to embark on a new project after years of tuning JDM MKIV Supras.

I am intending to install either an LS1 or LS6 into a FD3 RX7.

My question is which engine should I buy based upon wanting approx 450 bhp. Main criteria are cost then reliability. Is it cheaper to buy an LS1, add some heads and a cam, or start with the lS6 as the base or even an LS2?. The car will be primarily used for circuit days, so reliability is a big issue to me.

I know very little of these engines at present guys so please be gentle with me.

TIA

Whatever you can find cheapest. 450hp isn't ground breaking for the LSx platform and all of the above can reliably get you there.

LS6 is just an LS1 with a set of heads and a cam. (basically) An LS2 has a larger bore so more potential.

But 450hp is no big deal for any of the above.

I just spun a rod bearing and went looking myself. Best deal I found was a complete 2001 Vette crate motor from MIZFIT Motorsports for $3750. The bitch even came with a water pump.Add a cam and the boltons and you'll be close.

Thanks guys, I am in the UK so restricted to looking on ebay at the prices, and the LS1 certainly seems cheaper.

My train of thought is leaning towards:

LS1
AFR 205cc Heads
Comps Cams 224/228
Uprgrade the valve train
Fast inlet manifold C/W 90mm TB
85mm MAF

Does that all sound reasonable?

That's a good combo. Don't forget the little stuff you'll need. Upgraded fuel injectors, for example.

LS1s before 01 had inferior rod bolts so change those if you get an early one.

depends if u want to tear it open or not. i got a deal on a '98 and did a complete rebuild w/ aftermarket and ls6/2 parts. if u jus want to buy a pullout and drop it in the car. u should find something '01+.
