Default flames out exhaust

I was racing a 5.0 the other day and after we got pulled over for racing (stupid ) The cop said that he thought I might be running a little rich because he said he saw flames coming out of my exhaust. I have also noticed a loud pop noise once I push the clutch in right after a WOT run. I have had the car tuned and the dyno sheet says that my air to fuel is right on! I run longtube headers with an off road y-pipe with a single cutout that I keep open all the time. Any ideas or suggestions? Is this or could this be a problem in the future???

That must have been a really nice cop to point that out. Anyways, My car does this as well. Did it before the tune and after my tune, not really sure why though.

I used to shoot out of all four openings in mine..never saw it, i was told it was cool as **** though. Same loud popping

On my z, if i revved up high in 1st gear and let the rpms drop and stabbed the throttle a bit, i was told that flame came out of my cutout. I am guessing it had something to do with a changing a/f on the decel. It probably couldve been tuned out with some custom tuning, it never did it with the cutout closed btw. I didnt think of it as a problem.

Anyways, did that cop give you a ticket?

Correct, mad rich on decel.

Also correct, tuning can correct the problem.

My Headers/ORY/LM setup used to spit some fire if I backed off the gas at higher rpms.

Every video of my car at the track shows flashes under the car. I think it's normal and nothing to be worried about.

someone told me it has somthing to do with the hot air coming out of the exhaust hitting the cold air outside, makes it pop and a nice fireball somtimes. but he may have been talking about somthing else. when i had my duals dumped fire used to come out but the tail pipes got rid of that.

I doubt the pipes prevented the fireballs. They just contained them. I only get them when the cutouts are open.

When the car is running at WOT, your A/F ratio is as rich as it ever should be. If you drop the throttle all of a sudden, then it takes a split second for the PCM to adjust, so it gets extremely rich for just a second. Therefore, you get a burst of unburned fuel into the pipes, which will ignite in the pipes. If there's enough fuel or short enough pipes, you'll actually be able to see it.

Nothing to concern yourself about.
