Default Busting the Crank Nut Loose

I am stripping off the front of the engine in preparation for doing a heads / cam swap on my 2001 vette. When breaking the crankshaft nut loose so I can get to the pulley, etc how do you keep the crankshaft from rotating while pulling on the wrench to break the nut loose?

If auto, you'll need something to stop the flywheel from turning. If M6, i did 6th gear + E-brake. Have fun, they are a PITA to take off, let alone put back on..

Getting the crank bolt isn`t bad. I hate the the powersteering bracket and lines. Moving the steering rack isn`t that bad. Couple of small things to consider.
-Maybe LS6 timing chain while your in there.
-Maybe pin the crankshaft while your there and never have to worry about it coming loose. Once you break the factory press on the balancer it is tough to get it on as strong as it was. Mine came loose with 450rwhp on my vette and I had to go through the whole steering rack removal again. Good Luck LS1how to has a great write up on head cam swap that what I used.

Get a NEW CRANK BOLT!

LS2 Chain is better than the LS6 chain(I believe the ls6 is a stock ls1 but can't be sure) LS2 chain is listed as a heavy duty chain, and tons of people use it without issue. As said you'll need a new Bolt, but you should also go to local hardware store and get a longer bolt than stock. This will help when you try to seat the new balancer. Since you have to take the pump off might as well get a new one too.. yada yada yada.. i can go on... I recently just finished up my H/C install so if any questions feel free to send me a PM..

You cant buy an ls1 or ls6 chain anymore, all part numbers should be superceded by the ls2 part.

I bought a breaker bar that is about 24 inches long + a 4 foot long galvanized steel pipe. They both came in handy especially if you want to do heads later. The steel pipe works good with a torque wrench because it magnifies the click sound the TQ wrench makes when it reaches the ft/lb setting.
