boring a 5.3
boring a 5.3 Just an arbitrary question but seeings that the blocks are basically the same(other than iron vs. aluminum) what's the max bore on an iron 5.3? I can't imagine it would go the needed .220 to swing it into a 6.0 on stock sleeves but the only spec difference between the three motors seems to be bore and externally they measure the same in deck and width. They all use the same stroke on the crank, just bore, rods and pistons are different. Just looking at doing a stroker 5.3 using Eagle pieces or maybe Scat. ANy opinions?
Im doing the same right now. Many people say not to bore over .060 over, but a book I have mentions that you can easily and safely bore a 5.3L block to 3.898(they said is stock bore on ls1) and make a 5.7L.
The stock bore on the 5.3 is 3.780.. If you bore it .060 over to 3.840 then put a 4" stroke you end up with a 370, pretty respectable increase in volume.

I'm just toying with whether to bore the 5.3 big or just go buy a 6.0 and not worry with it. Don't want to run a super-bored motor if I don't have to. I hate heating problems and block movement with a big bore is an issue on earlier stuff.
Post some close up pictures of a virgin 5.3 block. You can get a rough idea this way. The old Mark IV 454 blocks are so thick, you literally can tell by glancing at them you can go well past .060" over.

we've gone .120" on old big motor and stroked the snot out of them but to be dependable at speed we had to at least do a partial block fill to keep the sleeves stable enough to hold pressure. I'm still leaning towards the 6.0 but I've got a perfect 5.3 sitting here going to waste. Seems nobody wants it so maybe I'll just see what it will take!! Honestly the prospect of doing an LS402 really looks good and makes HUGE amounts of torque and hp. Add a small 150 shot to it and hold on.......
