Default 1st gear at 65

Alright guys I did it now what can I expect. I was In town this morning and a fox body pulled next to me and started to pace me. So we ended up running from about a 40 dig. When I went for third I hit first. When I droped the clucht and the violent shutter unleashed I quickly pressed in and went to neutral. Drove it home with out any noises or problems. Can I expect anything to break now?

I went into 2nd instead of 4th at the top of 3rd and slammed some valves into some pistons. Obviously bent the valves and drove it like that (VERY rough running) for a little over a month before it developed a main bearing knock.

putting it in first at 40mph isn't too bad. Worst case probably bent pushrods but it doesn't sound like you did. I will put it into 2nd at 60, and third at 90. You probably didn't even get to 7000 assuming you have stock 3.42's

Stock heads and/or valvetrain? If you've got stock pushrods and you're comfortable with it, I'd pull them and confirm they're still straight. You should know if you damaged a piston by it's manners.

You'd know if there was something wrong with the motor right away, however, depending on how hard you hit into gear, be prepaired to replace your rear end in the not so distant future.

Alright Thanks guys! Yeah Im still runing the stock gears so if they break it wont be such a bad thing, Ive been waiting for it so I could replace it with a nice rear end. The car drove fine today without engine noise. But I did notice a pop through the exhaust when feathering the throtle at take off. But Im thinking thats either a plug or maby a coil pack.

Or that could be a slightly bent exhaust valve that isn't properly closing all the way and leaking fuel into the exhaust causing the pop.

Kinda off topic....but I've read that 3.42's m6 f bodies can go roughly 55 in 1st, 75 in 2nd, 105 in third...and I forget the rest...also in video game that how fast they go....any truth to my question?

Sounds about right to me, I know I trap 109mph at the track in 3rd without bouncing the limiter, but my revlimiter is at 6400, stock is 6200 so your probably about on...

If I read the original post right, he raced from a 40mph roll, and when he went to shift third, he got it in first instead. Putting it in 1st at 75mph would be bad.

I did the 2-3-2 shift once, and it broke the trans mount, but that was all. If you seem to get the pop in the exhaust all the time, you could run a compression and leakdown test to know if there was any damage. Just make sure you do it with the engine as warm as possible (for a better valve seal).

most common issue after a mechanical overrev is a bent pushrod, which are easily replaced. A few unluck people have bent valves though, so there are no guarantees.

The title says 65 mph w/ first gear. That would put him deep into the 7000+ range.

The Poping is not constant. It only happened 2 to 3 times in the 2 days after bad shift. Thas what was making me think it was plug, wire, coil pack, instead of a vavle.

You might have a bent pushrod though. It can be a number of things, or just all in your head as well.
