Im also considering keeping stock cubes but staying with the idea of being forged, for forced induction later down the road.

Building an all iron motor doesn't make much sense unless you are shooting for 1000+hp. Then if you do, what transmission/drivetrain setup is going to handle that? Not worth the 100+ extra lbs on your front end IMO. I have never seen anyone report an aluminum block related failure.

I'd prefer keeping the alum. block, i know cop car hates it and thinks it's dumb but it's just a personal preference, although i'm very open to the 402. I'm considering staying with the 347 and simply rebuilding and forging that...how much cash would i be looking at doing that VS. a 402, also i'm considering the stock CI because i'm not wanting ot have to go buy a bigger cam and new heads, and i'd like to set the car up for forced induction on forging the stock cid.

If you use aluminum, just use an engine girdle and you can take to 1,000+ horsepower - no problem!

Wow this post is old but I want to add my experience building a 408. I think a 383 would meet your goals but let me share what I have learned.

I came across a good deal on a lq4 block that needed to be rebuilt. I started getting into the "well Im already rebuilding it I might as well...." and it ended up costing me. I originally planned on spending about 3500 and it has cost me twice that. Dont get me wrong I now have a badass 408 with forged crank, rods, pistons, AFR 225 heads, etc but if I had to do it over again I would have saved money and just done a basic rebuild with forged pistons (maybe rods too) and a good set of heads.

If you do a 402/408 you have to factor in all the supporting mods like making sure your rear end and flywheel/clutch/tranny will hold up. It looks like you have a nice bolt and cam setup right now and you will be able to re use a lot of those parts if you go with a forged 347/383. If you go forced induction you will want a lower static compression ratio.

If I were you I would do a 383 with an eagle crank, compstar forged rods and some Wiseco nitrous pistons. If you are not satisfied with your numbers you can always add a healthy dose of nitrous. Option 2 would be to re use your crank and put that $900 towards porting your heads. and doing a forged 347.

Did you already make a decision since this first posted?
