Switching to synthetic...
Alright...dumb question probably, but this will be my first dealing w/synthetic!
My new Hawk's first oil change is coming up, and was planning to switch to Mobil 1. Do most dealer svc depts. stock this already, or do you have to supply your own? Do I need to specify anything else other than "Mobil 1" when I drop it off?
Lastly, if I do in fact need to supply it, what weight would you guys recommend for a daily interstate driver?

Re: Switching to synthetic...
USe the Mobil 1 5W-30. No, the dealer won't stock it. Even if he did, it'd cost twice as much as the local autoparts store. Just buy some and deliver it along with the car.

Re: Switching to synthetic...
All the dealers I go to usually don't stock it...you can use either 10w-30 or 5w-30...there isn't really that big of a difference...

Why would the dealer not stock mobile 1 5W 30?
They have to use that for the C5.
When I took my 2000 C5 in for its first free oil change waaay back thats what they had, and put in it.
EDIT: ooops just saw you guys had firehawks. You should be able to have it done at a chevy dealer tho.

All GM dealers stock it. Remember they sell C5's which come from the factory with Mobil. My dealer charges $44.95 for a Mobil 1 oil change. I do all of my own maintenance work, but thats a pretty good price.

They will have it, but it will be cheaper for you to bring. Trust me. Most people use 10w-30 and the car take 5.5 quarts.

Re: Switching to synthetic...
Yea thats not a bad price...I get 6 quarts(case) for 24.99 and buy a fram or mobil 1 oil filter..
the fram is cheaper and the mobil 1 costs around 12 bucks...
I change my own oil to save on the charges...

Re: Switching to synthetic...
Frams are the worst oil filters out there, I wouldn't put that on a beater car! They use cardboard endcaps and shitty plastic bypass valves that go into bypass mode almost right away. If you're gonna run a $3 oil filter, go with the AC Delco, it's a good filter for the money. Although for best engine protection, go with the Ultraguard Gold or Mobil 1 (K&N filter is the same as the Mobil 1 also)
As far as oil weight, go with the 10w30, except for those months when it's below 32F, then go with the 5w30. The 10w30 offers better long term protection since it uses little or no viscosity index improvers, so it stays stable longer than 5w30. Plus it offers better high temperature protection because of it's higher flash point.

Re: Switching to synthetic...
Every so often you can get 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 at Walmart for 17.99. When they have it stock up
This is a great deal.

COOL...Thanks for the help guys!
I always did pretty much the standard run-of-the-mill stuff w/ my 2000 T/A, but the new Hawk will have only the finest!

I also run Royal Purple. I use 5W30 because thats what the manufacturer suggests. Actually in this climate (Houston) 10W30 would be just fine, but you northern guys should stick with the 5W30. Definitely go with Royal Purple though, if for no other reason than purple oil looks really cool.

Im currently using Valvoline Synthetic in my Formula. But I have Mobil 1 in my GTP. No oil consumption issues on either one at this time.

And I do bring my own oil to the dealer and let them change it, costs me like $9 for them to do it, and I get free tire rotations besides..well not anymore now I drag radials on!

Re: Switching to synthetic...
I switched from Mobil-1 to Valvoline Synthetic. My oil consumption has gone down significantly. I have a feeling if I ever get around to doing the PCV mod, it'll all but cease...
I was burning about 1-quart of Mobil-1 every 3,500 miles.
