Best Operating Temp of the LS1
I have been looking around and noticed that
there is some huge debate about the optimum
temp of the ls1 for best horsepower results.
I personally have a pinging monster during
summer heat. After say 100 miles of hwy driving
ill get the 1500-1800 rpm knock when your rolling
about 70-80 in 6th gear. I figure that I can
fix that will a cooler thermostat.
Recently I dynoed with autotap with coolant tmep 225 steady.. I was told BOILING hot.. hehe
stock gauge read 210.
Some thoughts that come to mind are
(1.) Is ther more engine wear colder/hotter
(2.) Emissions well.. Ill let my kid worry about that.
(3.) Gas washdown.. well i change my oil often
I would be nice to have a level of heat that
was the best for engine life hopefully without
that summer road trip ping..

Re: Best Operating Temp of the LS1
My car seems to like about 190* the best. Below that it feels “sluggish” and much above 200* it also feels down on power.
Once you go much below 160 to 170 is when all those other issues you mentioned start to come into play. Like cylinder wash and extra wear on the motor.
I get 0 KR anywhere between 185 and 206 which is as hot as my car has ever gotten with my 180 stat and 180 fan settings.

I'm not sure if I have the patience to read it a second time let alone a third; Rand doesn't even use Saidin until the 3rd book

Wrong, he starts involuntarily using Saidin in book 1, read through it again and you will see he starts getting randomly sick because of the Power Acquisition Syndrome. Why else do you think Moirane didn't have to use Saidar on Bella?

I always found that with mine too. The key is that you want the bottom end of the engine to be good and hot, with nice high oil temperatures for lower friction, but by hotlapping like that you also keep the intake and throttle body nice and cool so it continues to make good power. Just don't idle the engine in the pits with the hood closed, or you will heat soak that intake and throttle body, and your times will drop drastically (I found that out once when my times dropped almost a half second from idling in the pits and the intake was super hot!)

Re: Best Operating Temp of the LS1
Going to the track on the 8th to confirm, but 190* seems my best. Anything over 200 I lose major timing. From 25* @ 6k (190) to 15.5* @ 6k (215).. Last time at the track I didn't have a way to cool down, @ 220 ran a 13.35. We'll see what happens on the 8th..

How much KR did you have? 25 is low, should be about 27.5. That 15.5 is insanely low, even for 215*. You must have some serious KR.

I stand corrected . . . in a way I didn't explain . . . he doesn't intentionally or knowingly use Saidin until the 3rd book
Making Bella run faster than Lan's warhorse was pretty cool though! So was the lightning bolt

RPM, I thought there would be major KR but there was 0.. It is weird.
