isn't excessive overlap what makes a cam have a coppy idle?

Overlap is what gives you the choppy idle quality. Higher durations and lower LSA in crease overlap. Two cams with the same durations, one on 114LSA and the other on 110LSA, the 110 has more overlap and a choppier idle.
a 224/228 cam on a 110 lsa will have 6 degrees overlap (224+228)/2 - 2(110) = 6
a 228/232 cam on a 112 lsa will also have 6 degrees overlap (228+232)/2 - 2(112) = 6
a 232/236 cam on a 114 lsa will have 6 degrees overlap too (232+236)/2 - 2(114) = 6
