Default how much does milage decrease with large cam?

a buddy of mine has a 99 camaro M6 with a TSP 237/242 cam in it on a 112. true duel with x pipe, lid, deleted egr is about the extent of his mods i beleave. he says he is only getting around 100 miles to a tank in the city is this normal with a large cam?

the reason i ask is because i bought the motor from him and want to make sure its the cam thats screwing the milage and not the motor.

Wow I go about 175-200miles of mixed highway/city driving on a tank, filling up at the 1/4 tank mark.

any thoughts or comments will help...do yall think anything is messed up with the motor or is it most likely the cam or a shitty tune...maybe a combo. i think the cam and tune was done by hpe but the 02 sensors melted right after he got it back. i dont want to throw it in my truck only to turn around and take it out

i would definatly say get a new tune done on that sucker. i would also say that you cant really expect near stock gas mileage with a really big cam either. some people do in their 6 speed cars but that is on the highway that they do

i plan on swapping the cam to a tsp 224r or a custom grind 226 on xer lobes. that cam is way too big for my ecsb auto. hopefully the milage will get WAY better lol. i cant do 1-200 per tank. its bad enough at 400 per tank on a stock 5.3

if you think 400 to th tank is "bad enough" i think you should stay away from a cam

haha ive gotten it up to 600 on a tank so the 400 could definately be better. i figure if i drive like a normal person i can keep 400 to a tank with a cam, and i wont feel like doggin it all the time when i know i have enough to break crap...im running 13.8 allmotor now, stepping to a ls1, cam and nitrous aughta feed my need for mo powa for a while.

isnt a 224/224 112 or 226/226 112 considered a baby cam for the ls1 anyways?

no those are considered good size cams, and very respectable cams. the 224 is a great cam. alot of people are running great times with that cam

well im looking for a cam to get me into the 12's all motor on street tires. then ill have a cold fusion kit in my closet waiting for install so i figure 224/224 is the smallest i can go to make my goals.

I used to have a 224/224 575/575 114 cam but it does not hold a candle compared to the T-rex I have now

The cam in the sig didnt change the mileage at all. the more overlap a cam has the more the mileage suffers.

isn't excessive overlap what makes a cam have a coppy idle?

higher durations and lower LSA make for choppier idle.

so the general concensus is that the motors fine...even at 100k miles. the large cam and possibly bad tune is killin the milage. im thinkin about swappin up to a lq9 now if he's willing to let me.
