Default What do you think of a .563/.563//222/222//114??????

The shop that will be doing my cam install is recommending this cam for me as I will be getting custom tuning as well (A4). With tuning, how do you think this cam will do for me? I’ll be using stock heads/intake, headers (MACs) with RT cats, 3500 stall, and the other common bolt-ons.

Those of you who have been following my other cam posts will remember that I was looking for a low lift cam for valve spring reasons, but he has informed me that his shop has done many of these cams with 918 springs and none have broken yet.

Honestly, this cam scares me It’s pretty big, and I’m worried about “issues”. How high would I have to spin the motor with this cam? I’m thinking I’d have to shift at 6400. I do like this cam over the B1 though as it is $75 cheaper

Your opinions please...

Horse power difference will probably be around 10rwhp but then again I will not have to rev much past 6300. Plus I sould have no problems with emissions due to the 114 LSA and the 218 intake duration.

These are the reason I went with this cam and did not go with the bigger ones.

Just my .02.

So what does everyone else think about this? Would going down to a 218/218 from a 222/222 but raising the LSA from 112 to 114 put the power band in basically the same spot?

Like Raughammer said, since I’m getting custom tuning anyway, I might as well go “all the way”.

I’d like to shift out at 6300 with whatever cam I go with. 6400 is the absolute most I’d consider. 6300 is preferable though.

According to BIGBOS the 222/222 112 will pass emissions, so that won’t be an issue either. Any more opinions/facts on this are welcome!

I want to get this right the first time!

The 114LSA is your best choice. Idle and emissions will be better and the powerbands nearly identical.
Also comparing the powerbands of the 112 vs 114LSA cams does not show a significant difference in where peak power comes in (most of the time not even 100rpms difference. I think this cam is pretty good but maybe you should machine your heads for double springs while you have everything apart. It is a great time to do Stage 1 heads I would consider a slightly smaller cam if you arent planing on setting your rev limit to 6600 and shifting at 6400rpms. Also this would be a good time to do an ARE oil pump install as well. The B1 cam is a great choice as well. (221/221 558 lift 114LSA)
Cheers,
Chris

I would go with MTI or MMS tuning as you can still use your HPP3 with it to adjust shift points which you will need to and not have them fixed and HOPE they are correct

Well, I’m at the end of my budget, so head machining and/or stage 1 heads are out of the question.

I’d like to go the MTI route, but I already have a buyer for my HPP3 and I’d like to sell it. I don’t want to pay $500 for custom tuning and still have an HPP3 that cost me $300.

I can tell you now that I want to shift at 6300rpm. The installer has also just emailed me saying that the 222/222 112 will probably not pass emissions. With that said, would the .563/.563//218/218//114 be a better choice for my rpm limits? Or should I stick with the 222/222 114 version?

I’ll be using 918 springs which seem to have a good reputation so far on this cam.

This would be a good choice for shifting at 6300? If so, then I think we have a winner!

BTW, I've seen that "IC" many times, but I never knew what it stood for. Care to enlighten me Ragtop? Thanks

Intake Centerline. essentially 4 degrees of advance ground in. It may help lower the power band.

6300 should be ok. I would use 6400 if you are comfortable with it. Even on the stock cam, most people report better times by raising the shift points because of wide gear spacing on the A4s

Thanks for the explanation Ragtop! 6400 would be ok I guess.

So if you don't mind one more question, are there any disadvantages to running 4 degrees of advance vs. say 2, or none? This is the one area of cam specs that I really know nothing about! Any help you can give is much appreciated!

So more advance won't kill emissons? I would gladly go with less LSA if it would pass, but since it won't, I'll have to settle for a "band aid" fix.

Maybe I should still go the 218/218 route after all? The more I learn, the more confused I get

Advance will not kill emissions.

IMO a 222/114 with a 110IC is plenty of cam.

So you think I should stick with the 222 over the 220 that Ragtop recommended? Remeber I want to shift at 6300, 6400 at MOST...

According to Judson Massingill at the School of Automotive Machinists, an LS1 will make the most power under the curve with a properly selected cam installed straight up (meaning no advance and no retard).

If a car picks up by advancing the cam, the cam is too large. If it picks up by retarding the cam, the cam is too small. A properly selected cam for the combination will always run best straight up. One caveat...most installers do not check the installed intake centerline when installing a cam. Often, the stock timing chain and sprocket set has some retard built into it. Because of this, a cam ground with some advance to it might actually get it closer to straight up if you just line up the dots. Best case though, is to check it with a degree wheel.

I started a post last week about single vs split and most here seemed to agree that with the great flowing exhaust ports of LS1 heads and headers, that a split pattern would offer no improvement with it’s increased exhaust duration. And that a single pattern would both idle better and probably make more power.

Maybe you guys should shut down this site and write a 1,000 page book entitled "LS1 TECH". You'd make millions!!! And it would answer everybodys q's!

j/k

this site is great, keep the cam info coming-

Most of Judson's hydraulic stuff was installed advanced if I remember based on past conversations with him.

RPM, 222/114 will be a performer.

218/114 will be a stronger runner maybe a tenth slower.

PSJ,

I talk to Judson every week and I know for a FACT that all his hydraulic cams were installed straight up...he is very opinionated about this...he even mentioned this in articles in Hot Rod and GM High Tech Performance magazines.

I'm sure his 221/223/113 cam or his later 224/230 cam was 2 degrees advanced.
