LS1 burning oil
My 00 LS1 burns oil pretty bad. It only does it when i let off though. I've tried a bunch of things to try and cure this. I've tried different PCV setups, i've even bypassed the PCV and it still does it.
This just started happening @ 14K miles. I was running dino oil for the first 8K and then switched to 10w30 mobil1. I recently switched to 5w30 mobil1 and installed headers and that's when i first noticed my car smoking.
I just switched over (2 days ago)to 10w30 castrol syntech to see if it helps any.
Do you guys think that this is hurting the performance of my car? I don't know what to do. I've read all about the new rings and PCV mods and all of that. I don't think anything actually cures this problem though. Some guys have replaced the pistons and rings with aftermarket ones and still have the same problem. Others ave gotten the 02 rings and they didn't help.
I know this has been brought up alot, but i see alot of people "USING" oil and not a lot of cars "SMOKING". I just wanted to see if there are others and to see what they've done.
thanks for any replies in advance.
second it is caused by ring fluter under certain driving conditions. see January GM high tech per magazine for details it is under the article covering the diffrences between '01 and '02 ZO6s
Second, as i mentioned before some people have replaced their rings and it doesn't solve the problem.
I really don't want to take my car to the dealer and have them tear down my motor for a week and then replace the rings only to find out it still does it.
Yeah but that means i have to pull off my headers which is something i don't want to do.

Well first off, if it's free and under warranty, what would be the problem?? It's their dime, not yours.
Second, if going to the dealer is needed, than you will have to go for it.... Unless you would like this problem to continue and get worse. If rings don't fix the problem, it's their job to find out why not. That's the beauty of a warranty .
BTW, about 99% of all LS1's burn oil. Some burn different amounts than others, but I have yet to hear of one that didn't burn ANY oil.

My actual question is does it hurt performance any? I was questioning this since i've seen alot of people that have this problem and just delt with it.
but as to the rings they redesigned them so as not to flutter.

I was actually thinking about letting all the oil burn up and locking up my motor. That's an easy way to get them to give me a new motor

Except they wouldn't, 'cause they'd void the warranty for running the engine without lubrication...
I guess I'm part of the 1%, as I don't lose any significant amount of oil between changes. Sure, my intake tract is slimy as hell, but it's not pulling enough into the intake to register more than about ¼ quart in 3000 miles. Not that I'm complaining...
I don't enjoy installing and removing MAC headers, once was enough. I don't like the fact that my 2000 smokes either....
The Service Manager said that they wont fix unless you are burning 1 qt/600-900 miles.
I am going to try another dealership.
Mine seems to mainly use oil on long cruises, which seems kinda weird considering the gears I have.

BTW: All you people that don't use any oil make me sick!! If everyone burned oil maybe GM would issue a recall

LMAO
Sorry, I'll try and beat on it a little harder and see what I can do.
