Default Best compression for a 6.0 motor ???

I have a stock block with '01 6.0 aluminum heads. Currently it has 9.4:1 compression. I want to get the compression up on it. How much would I gain going to a 10:1 compression? This motor will need a good balance of HP and touque.

The pistons could be changed for escalade pistons to get to 10:1 for about $400. Would having the heads milled be better or cheaper than going to the pistons?

Has anyone done a "mild home port and polish" on heads with any success?

Having the heads shaved will be cheaper than ordering and installing the Escalade pistons, but you'll have to get your valvetrain geometry back in check, so to speak. You'll need a set of shorter pushrods. You'd be looking at .030"-.035" off of the head surface to net 10:1. I don't know the exact #. 10:1 would be the most compression I'd run on a truck that is still gonna see any towing duties.
A mild port and polish job could definitely benefit, but only if it's done right. <img src="gr_tounge.gif" border="0"> I don't know much about porting and polishing, so I won't even attempt.

Thanks Trevor. I dont do much towing, but it is my daily driver. I agree on the port and polish. I really don't want to screw anything up.

Do you know a good local shop for the mill work?
