and this with "normal" driving... motor had maybe 2K on it...

I am thinking it was the "tune" or lack there of.. i was told it was the springs.. However they are in tact..

Your thoughts??

Car was surging @ idle in both park/drive... Did not surge @ all when i dropped it off..

Oh well... "pay to play" i guess....

Dropped a valve from what it looks like. If you have stock valves that's always a possibility. I can't imagine that stock valves won't have some defects a certain percentage of the time.

Can you give some details on the cam, heads, and valvesprings that were on the car?

Did you find the valves for that cylinder? Springs can still be in tact if the lock gave up or the retainers broke. Deffinatlly looks like a dropped valve.

I've seen similar looking pistons and they got that way from severe detonation. Sorry to hear of your motor.

if detonation caused this, you would think the driver would hear it detonating,if mine does i can hear it loud and clear over my gmmg. And i can look at my scanner and see it appear as i hear it.sorry to hear about the motor

thats a droped valve.. no sign of det. on the piston (whats left of it) and the ringlands are still intact..so i vote for a valve related issue..possible p\v clearance problem maybe? was the cam installed dot to dot? i would check that as well..and this is just my .02

Then all the cylinders would be damaged, not just 1.

To the original poster, what brand were the heads and do you know what brand valves were used? It looks like the head of the exhaust valve broke off. You can still see the stem in the guide. Is the intake stem still in the guide too? It's hard to tell in the picture.

Not necessarily, there are deck variences that could have cause that. When I built my motor there was about a .006 range between all the pistons.

What ever you want to believe then. That massive amount of damage to only 1 cylinder was caused by a cam installed wrong.

True, but do that type of damage or even remotley close to, you have to detonate EXTREMLEY hard, none the less the piston show line-like contact marks that spell valve all the way. I dropped a valve on my then turbo Integra at ~8800rpm, the carnage was awfull similar to what you see here.

My condolences to the owner

Ok, you dropped the car off at a shop and it ran fine and when you picked it up it ran like **** and shortly thereafter it went boom??? If that is the case it sounds to me like somebody was joyriding your car at the shop. Did a manual shift on it and overreved it or something like that. I don't know the entire story so forgive me if I missed something but something about it being in somebody else's hands and coming out of the ordeal messed up wouldn't sit well with me.

I am going to go for the dropped valve as you would think someone would check clearances before building a motor.

I would see it being a variance in the head or such but you don't think it would cause that damage. Maybe just a dent. I have had a valve dent a piston before due to a clearance issue and it didn't do that much damage. Just barely touched it.

Wow, that thing cracked down the side. Thought that this was going to be a nitrous accident when I first saw it. Sucks.
