lobe pitting on cam.
i purchased a cam from a board member a few months ago...it arrived at my house in a timely manner then i opened up the box and read ms3 on the end i thought to myself how much faster it would rev my car and so i could stop banging the table imating the lope it makes BUT upon closer inspection, i found a small area of pitting on one of the lobes i was reasured by him that i would be fine because it came out of a running motor. It would be fine i Its finally coming time to install it and my concern is after the install it will eat a lifter and wreck my motor and my freshly ported heads so my question , how should i go about this situation?

when i took my old TR224 cam out of my car, the nose of every lobe was like that...actually they were a lot worse. the car ran just as fine, and never lost any HP over it. but it always had an extremely loud valvetrain that i now blame on that...when i put my new cam in, i put some LS7 lifters in and it is quiet as stock now.
moral of the story, i didn't have any problems, just a lot of valvetrain noise, but like Jon "pHEnomic" said...what's a $400 cam vs. possible an entire motor??
Edit: update your sig man!! Torquer cam!!

thanks for the responces...i just paid $250 for a cam that should not be installed in a motor...a cam is a precision internal part and should be treated as one...
what caused them?you need torquer cam??

maybe try sending it back to TSP and see if they'll warrant it? since you're not the original owner, it's hard to say though, TR warrantied my cam cause i still had the reciept from like 4 years ago they sent me a new set of lifters, and they were willing to send me a new cam, but since i was swapping it out already, i said don't bother, but thanks and i was happy and on my way and plenty pleased with Thunder Racing on the issue!
edit, i just deleted the pictures of my TR cam off of my camera the other day and aparently i never uploaded them

Haha, thanks for the reminder, Matt.
Try and talk to the original owner of the cam to see if you can get a refund or at least partial because the part was not as described and under these conditions, it is usless for you.

I think this would be a MUCH more critical issue on a flat tappet lifter engine rather than the roller lifter setup on the LS1. Regardless, I would still send the cam back. I had the same thing happen on the forum and the guy took the cam back... however the damage didn't look as bad as the cam in your picture.

I am sorry for your misfortune but I do not understand why you would pay $250 for a used cam. You can get them brand new for about that.

After having my old cam tearing up 2 sets of lifters, i would suggest getting a clean cam. Even though you might get away with it since its over to the side, its not worth the risk. IMO, its worth 400 bucks not to have to pull the heads and buy new lifter in 5K miles.
You could also see about having the cam reground, although i dont know how cost effective it will be...

If I were you I wouldn't do it. Take a look at what happened to me and I had a good cam to start out with. I'm currently replacing the whole short block just to be safe as the fragments were scattered around in the engine. I could of had it rebuilt but I decided to get a built one instead. When I pulled the cam out almost all of the lifters and lobes looked like the ones shown here:
