and this with "normal" driving... motor had maybe 2K on it...
I am thinking it was the "tune" or lack there of.. i was told it was the springs.. However they are in tact..
Your thoughts??
Car was surging @ idle in both park/drive... Did not surge @ all when i dropped it off..
Oh well... "pay to play" i guess....

thats a droped valve.. no sign of det. on the piston (whats left of it) and the ringlands are still intact..so i vote for a valve related issue..possible p\v clearance problem maybe? was the cam installed dot to dot? i would check that as well..and this is just my .02

To the original poster, what brand were the heads and do you know what brand valves were used? It looks like the head of the exhaust valve broke off. You can still see the stem in the guide. Is the intake stem still in the guide too? It's hard to tell in the picture.

True, but do that type of damage or even remotley close to, you have to detonate EXTREMLEY hard, none the less the piston show line-like contact marks that spell valve all the way. I dropped a valve on my then turbo Integra at ~8800rpm, the carnage was awfull similar to what you see here.
My condolences to the owner

I am going to go for the dropped valve as you would think someone would check clearances before building a motor.
I would see it being a variance in the head or such but you don't think it would cause that damage. Maybe just a dent. I have had a valve dent a piston before due to a clearance issue and it didn't do that much damage. Just barely touched it.
