Loud whistle from engine in cold weather under 2k RPMS?
What could it possibly be? I thought maybe a vacum leak but it is only at start up in colded weather and under 2k rpms, and only seems to be when the motor is under load? BTW the weather is in the upper 20's and 30's. Any ideas?

Checked belts are fine. Only things that could whistle might be the intake lid, ported maf, or prted tb, or the cuppling. Although psj mentioned the airm pump. Anyone had this problem?

although i didn't have a distinct whistling sound, i found out that i had an exhaust (header) leak, which was fixed and the noise has since subsided. you didn't install the headers yet did you?

I have a 2002 Z28, it whistles also when it's cold, after a minute or two it stops. I don't think it's a problem, it started when I got my air lid. Sounds like the air pump or something, also once the whistling stops there seems to be noticably more steam coming out of the exhaust, thats just an observation.

Don't know if this might be the answer, but there was a whistling problem with the LS6 intake, which is now on the f-body cars. Maybe it is the reason that GM stopped production on the intake, to redesign it

Nope my 01' had the LS6 intake as well; no whistling for 26k miles before I traded it in.

I have it too. Not sure what it is. It goes away after 2k rpms because the engine/exhaust drowns it out I think. However, cruising at a steady 60mph or so (just under 2k) produces the whistling sound pretty loudly. With the cutout closed it's pretty annoying. It's always done it, but it's gotten pretty loud recently. No changes made either. I got FTRA/K&N/LID. Free EGR mod, TB bypass. I picked up a bit of a whistle initially from freeing up the intake, but this is just weird. Maybe the cold air just makes a diff noise being denser?

i would certainly think it is the air pump, especially if it goes away after about 5 min. also when you take a aftermarket lid, there is less silencers (none actually). i would not worry about it. sounds very normal.

I'm almost positive that it is the air pump. I had a loud *** whirring sound which sounded like it was coming from everywhere, and could not pinpoint the exact location. It also didnt do it every time I did a cold start, but 75% of the time. I put headers on the car, took the air pump out, and wallah..no more sound

Yep, mine does it to till it gets warm and it's the air pump. Easiest way to tell is to pop your hood and put your ear near the little air filter you installed on your air pump hose when you put the new lid on. You should hear that loud sort of whistle sound coming from there.
