Default ?'s from Chevy High Performance Magazine

I am a freelance writer for Chevy High Performance magazine and I would like the magazine to have more articles dealing with the LS1 F-body. I'd like to hear from you about any article suggestions. Here are some to get you started:

1) Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor readout / fan control switch - This would be a 2 part article that first introduces the reader to the sensor and how it works then provides a circuit that lets the user accurately read the coolant temperature using a digital multimeter (or separate meter). (The F-body LS1 temperature gauge is inaccurate as you all know.) The second part of this article will show how to adjust when the low speed fans turn-on and turn-off. This circuit lets the user change the thermostat and control when the low speed fans come on and off with out buying an aftermarket programmer (e.g. Hypertech).

2) Oxygen sensor simulators - This is good for OBDII people that have removed their cats and do not want to throw any codes. I have designed an oxygen sensor simulator that is relatively easy to build. The cost is much less than the $100-$150 for ready-built simulators.

3) How to measure aerodynamic drag and rolling friction - Not an electrical article but very useful information.

4) Product review - Speedometer recalibrator - This could be a controversial topic. The calibrators are useful for people that have
changed rear end gears and want the speedometer and odometer to read correctly. I would compare the Cyberdyne and SLP models. I have the Cvberdyne speedometer calibrator and I have found a couple technical problems with their unit. I have fixed their design by changing a couple of components.

5) Product review - Mass air flow translator - This helps tweak the timing and the WOT A/F ratio. A description of the MAF would be given and how it interfaces with the PCM. I would review the RamChargers and the Granatelli versions.

The intent is not to turn the magazine into Popular Electronics, but provide more rounded high performance articles by discussing the electrical side too.

i would spend more time on the site and check out the fastest lists. Maybe email and ask around a little. I think a few guys should be in magazines for sure. Also, write-ups on NEW stuff would be best. FLP's v. TTS v. Grott would be cool. 69 v. 79 v. 89 v. 99 Camaro/Firebirds would be cool.

Hey where would i send a writing sample?

I agree with "The Underdog." You may wish to scope out some of the guys here. See what they are running and get opinions from them. Especially maybe talk to some of the sponsors since they always have their "wheels" turning try to improve products or send new ones out. I'm sure many of the members here will be more than happy to assist you. Finally, a magazine that asks the people what they want. I like it. Have a good one.

all of those would be great.

a header comparo would be top on my list also.

tire comparo-ir nitto DR, bfg DR, ET Street, vs. standard radial tire.

a good detailed article on autotap with what parameters to look at and how to log etc.

weight reduction article

a comparo that would settle all ? on the issue of camaro vs SS vs ta vs WS6

I'd love to see comaparsions of all the the different ported heads out there, also I would love to see expert opnions on what your looking for in different applications, such as boosted vs. nitrous vs. NA also no one ever talks about cams besides NA performance, so far ive seen a few cams that are optimized for nitrous put out TQ number like ive never seen, but not too many on supercharged apps. I see a post at least once a week about what a good blower cam is(they usually go unanswered), and sure there are certain guidlines for SBC on what a good cam is, but how about for an LS1 since its so much different than a SBC.... just some ideas i got tons more too hehe

A header comparison would be a great article for your magazine, you could also include your o2 sims in an article like that.

A LOT of people are always asking for a comparison between different longtube setups.

Wow Did I read correctly? A Chevy magazine actually giving us some LS1 related features? I thought GMHTP was the only mag to buy. Like others have said, comparsions between different headers, exhaust, suspension, etc would be awesome. Whatever you decide to do, please give us more F-body/ls1 coverage!!!

Wow! Thanks for the responses.

The Underdog - You can e-mail your ideas/letters to chevyhi@emapUSA.com Provide a short summary of the article you would like to author.

I'm trying get the magazine to recognize us. It seems that most of their background lies with the older stuff. I keep telling them that carbs are for lawnmowers.

I'd like to start with relatively "easy" articles (i.e. low budget) so that I don't scare the editors or the readership. That is why I suggested the articles above. Once we get some momentum going we can move into more detailed technical stuff like LS1 edit, etc.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

I would agree with everyone else who has replied before. I would really like to see a header comparison and a Blower/Turbo vs. N2O vs. All Motor comparison.

Looking forward to seeing some of the "Board Guys" in your Mag!

Thanks for the email address. Should I try to send in a tech article or an idea for a feature? Articles, in my mind, depend on the budget allowed. With lots of time and money, a head or header comparo would be awesome for carb guys switching over to see power and stuff. But free stuff, or pretty stock drag racing articles would be cool i think. Like an article on 2 or 3 of the stock internal guys from the board (the mid 11 sec dudes). Show the old school guys its cool to run a 4400 stall on the street and that you really dont need a worked big block to run mid 11's. I think free mods, atap, and o2 sims would be rather boring articles (no offense), but converter testing/tech stuff, and just plain EFI performance talk would gather interest.

I would strongly second one of the above suggestions:

An article on how to perform an Autotap on an LS1, logging the results, and adjusting the car for optimum performance. Many people could gain from this since information on how to do this well is not exactly widespread.

The LS1/LS6 is quite a powerful engine that takes to modifications well, but is still feared by some of the community as being too complicated, particularly with the factory FI harness and associated controls. Any article that could help dissuade that and show the engine's potential would be great.

And i know this is a predomenitly F-body forum, but how about doing more stuff that is "common" to both the F-body and the C5.

I know you asked about F-body LS1 stuff but I've waited over 4 months for a reply from your publication about an article on arguably the nicest LS1/T56 G-body on the planet

LS1 stuff applies to us too and with the demise of factory installed LS1's into F-body's where do you think the next biggest market in the future will be for LS1 performance......(hint: retro-fitting )

John - Nice car. You should submit something to GMHTP, I'm sure they would love your car.

something simple perhaps the PCV system on the LS1.

baker hose/fernco hose vs OEM hose.

OEM MAF vs Pace LS6 MAF w/LS1 calibrations.

basic stuff, like that with data. Unbiased.
