Largest cam with a stock stall converter...?
I know a stall is the way to go, but I do not want one yet. Before you say "Hey, get a stall." read the rest of this post. I am looking into putting a cam into my 2001 A4 and I was wondering what is the biggest you can go on a stock stall converter? I want a cam with more torque down low than anything (2,000-5,000 rpm range). What would you suggest? Let me know of any setups that you have seen that are similar to what I am asking. Also, I will be getting it tuned if that makes a difference in how large you can go.

The GT2-3 cam will give you 25/30 HP over stock and Idle better than stock. It's a little bigger than the LS6 cam and is a great baby cam. You can also use the Z06 springs.
GT2-3: 207/220,.571/.578, 118.5 LSA

For your rpm range you need a tight LSA cam with an early IVC. How big, that's a matter of what idle speed and idle quality you are willing to accept. something like a 214/220 113 110 would get some grunt at 2000 rpm but run out of breath in the higher rpms. You'll make it idle easily at 750. A little bigger: 218/220 112 110.
Both can use an XFI intake lobe and Xer exhaust lobe. You still should do a converter instead of this, but these will do what you are asking for.

On the other hand, converters start at about $500 plus much less labor to install. Then you are ready later when you decide to get a cam.
Just something to think about

If you're paying for the labor, factor that in too.

Also, I don't want my tranny to blow up any time soon.
Good luck to you with the build!

i have a 99 ss a4 with stock stall and a gm hot cam and after tuning and setting idle to 750 it does great. Bottom end is great but also have 3.73s so that makes some difference. Run the car with 315s on the rear and they won't hold the road in first gear and spin pretty good shifting into second. But if you get this cam make sure you get a good tune other wise it is a headache to drive, bad idle and dying. that 750 idle is without drilling a hole in throttle body as well. but if i had it to do over again don't think i would mess with a cam with this much overlap. would probably do a Z06 cam instead.
