Default My 98 LS1 failed IL emissions test today

I have a 98 LS1 TA with mac headers, orp, loudmouth, and 1 random tech cat welded in the intermediate pipe. 100% stock motor. It passed everything but the hydrocarbon (unburnt fuel) test. The standard is .60 and I did a 1.48. I have 2 more tries to pass, but each time I have to return with a repair bill from a mechanic or receipts for parts I buy. If I spend over $450 and still don't pass, but the car improves, I get a waiver and don't have to take the test again.

Any ideas on what I should do next to pass? Boshawk and PSJ say get a MAF-T and lean it out. I put the ported maf on today and was setting lean codes on the way to the testing station, though. I had to turn the car off and on in the testing lanes to clear the codes with the scanmaster so I could pass the OBD2 test. I'm not totally sure the maf-t would make it pass. Has anyone tried it?

If the maf-t can't do it, I think I'm going to have to break down and find a mac y with cats.

The cat is too far back to light off properly.
Also you should drive the car for at least 30 minutes on the highway and 30 minutes in the cuty before going to the sniffer. LEave your car running if you have too while you wait for the test.
Good luck,
Chris

Hey P-Nut.

I just got a notice too.

Anyway, I don't really understand emissions tests, maybe someone could explain it a little.

Do you recall what MPH they took your car up to on rollers, if that was the test you got? Also did they hook up an OBDII thing?

I would lean it out with a MAF T and rig your air pump to stay on.

I think the leanest you can get it is around 45%...I think that would be enough to pass the sniffer, the obd2 crap tests to make sure your CPU is good, Jim explained it to me, maybe he will post... <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

DUDE, your not too rich, or you would have failed CO, its probably not your missing cats either. I would say you have an ignition missfire from plug and or ign. wire thats bad, or you have a bad reading o2 sensor somewhere. Test vehicle for problem on a monitor or a scope to see whats up.

"good" or modified? I think they're just looking for SES codes, right?

Yea, they look for SES codes, they will pass your car as long as your car puts out the right exhaust #'s...

This emissions stuff is crap... <img src="graemlins/gr_barf.gif" border="0" alt="[barf]" />

Hc means unburned gas emission usually from missfire that is caused weak spark or lean miss, caused by lack of fuel not too much fuel(rich).
A cat doesnt do very much when engine is hot and running right.

As far as cat being too far back to light off, that is true to a point, but in your case you went from 2 cats to 1 and that puts alot of exhaust and heat into that 1 cat making it work much better. You should be fine with this aspect, but visually its illegal to do what you did.

Now here's a question, is the standard for a 95 LT1 different than for a 98 LS1? Reason I ask, they have a single cat setup.

Personally I think Jim's car should have passed bigtime.

Jim is your car idling rough? I'm wondering you are in need of a tune.

Idle is good, no ses lights other than the lean codes from the ported maf. It was low and used to surge a little, but I drilled the TB and now its solid at 650rpms in D. I have NGK TR5s or 55s (can't remember which) that I did last summer, but I still have stock wires. No exhaust or header leaks anywhere.

A couple of weeks ago I got an airpump code, but I cleared it and it never came back. I have the AIR restrictor mod done to kill the fluttering. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

I did a quick WOT blast on the way there, 0 degrees KR, highest 02 recorded by the scanmaster was 910. Strims are 0 at idle. They fluctuate a little bit between 0 and 2 sometimes. I drove around for an hour before I got to the station. I waited in line for about 10 minutes with the car on, then drove it up and got out. They did an evaporative leak test on the gas cap and tank, then plugged a scanner into the car to look for codes. Whether or not the car has SES codes does not affect the final result of the test, though. It really pissed me off because they lean their equipment and plugs all over the car like it's their own or something. Then they forgot to screw the gas cap on and I got a code for that on the way home.

Then they put it on the rollers, and lightly accelerated to 20mph and let off, then 30 and let off, 40, 50, and so on. The highest I saw it get to was maybe 55mph. They never went over 3k rpms either. After that, they rolled the car out, gave me the print out and some sheets to give to a mechanic for when I get it fixed.

They had no idea it was supposed to have 2 cats, or that I had modified anything. They didn't pop the hood or even look under the car. I thought it was for sure going to pass because it's basically the same setup as a single cat LT1.

How do I know if an O2 is bad? The numbers fluctuate up and down while I'm driving...I'm thinking from 600-850 is the norm.

CO emissions were 8, while the standard is 10 if that helps.

I don't want to do a racecar waiver or anything like that, I drive this car 15k miles a year, and almost everyday. And it's far from a race or showcar.

LS1derfull I read your replies. I have 40k miles on my wires and should probably change them anyway, and plugs at the same time. You really think this was because I was too lean?

I'm not quite sure what to do next, but I have a hookup on a mac Y with cats so I think I'll probably try that first.

And If I do spend $450, I get a waiver, but it doesn't say anywhere how long it lasts. I think its worth it to spend $450 if I never have to go through that again.

Thanks for the replies everybody.

Jim

JIMTA, thanks for the acknowledgement, First, do you have the stock maf or can you borrow one. None of your other mods should be causing hi HC's.
Second, i dont know what monitor you are using but TECH2 will show you what cylinders are missfiring as they do it. Your o2's should change frequently there is cross counts to keep track of how active o2's are.Important at idle.YOu could introduce a vacuum leak while monitoring O2's to see them react, your looking for equal responses. I hope your answer is in this info.

Jim, when you spend $450 you get a waiver for THAT YEAR only...
Kinda sucks.
At first I was really thinking it was the fact that the cat was too far back.
I think MAFT would help, but to be sure, you may want to get a MAC Y-Pipe with cats.

So they only check for SES codes? they don't check to make sure if the EGR/AIR is working properly(still there <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> ) or anything like that, right?

thanks,
Steve
