Default How long should I wait to dyno the car??

I just got the new engine in, it's got about 250 miles on it, hasn't seen over 4500 RPM yet, and I want to get at least 500 miles on the clock before I do any "real" WOT testing with it. I also want to get it on a dyno to test the AF and maybe get some LS1edit time, but I don't want to do it if I'm risking breaking something too soon.

My SS was strapped down on the dyno with 750 miles on the odometer. I'd recommend the minimum 500 miles as you said, and I'd change the break-in oil at that point as well. I'd stick with dino oil for a few thousand miles. I didn't switch over to Royal Purple synthetic until I had over 5,000 miles on the clock.

Yea do the usual 500....I wouldn't put it on the dyno till close to 1000...slowly work it in...

Dyno tuning involves a lot of top RPM runs....

I'd do the 500 for sure, maybe go 700-800, and then autotap like crazy... You should also fix that exhaust leak before you dyno.

Depends on where you got the engine from. Nick at ARE said two heat cycles for the rings and let her rip. If you've noticed, they put cars on the dyno usually within 48 hours of the engine going in, and often have them at the track the next week. I would definitely recommend changing the oil after about 50 miles and again at about 250 miles. Don't use any synthetic until you hit minimum 1500 miles. Most of the engine buildups use rings that require regular oil for break in.

Well, since I put the heads & cam on myself with a friends help, and it's a stock shortblock, I'm gonna at least wait the 500 miles, and by the time i schedule dyno time it will probably be closer to 750 miles...

2 heat cycles are fine.I had mine dyno'd and to
the track before 150 miles.Just remember,unless
your car had 0 miles on it when you bought it,
it was driven hard by guys like me who test drive
fast cars when I'm bored.Something to think about...

But wait 500 miles if you like.I'd be more concerned that I might be washing the rings if my
a/f was off(or detonating).Just more decisions you
have to make.

I was really easy on it for the first 500 miles. Didn't take it above 4K. Changed the oil at 500 and dyno for the first time at 1300. Changed oil again at 1500 and will change to Royal Purple at 3,000.
