Default How can Doug Rippie get these numbers??? (long)

I was checking out Doug Rippie's site (www.dougrippie.com) and have a few ???'s. His DRM 450 "Top end" package claims 445 HP and 435 TQ. He claims to achieve this with ported heads, valve springs, retainers, pushrods, custom grind cam, tri-flo exhaust, computer tuning K&N, and an airbox modification. He also says it 348 cid, but I think that is a typo.

How in the Hell is he getting that kind of power out of a H/C car? The best stage 2 set-ups I have seen were right around 425 HP. Am I wrong, have I not looked at the right H/C cars, what gives?

It seems to me that if you bought all brand new part from a sponsor, you'd be close to the 6k he is asking. His deal sounds prety good to me, maybe I'll let him operate on my car???

If I spent 6k, and did the labor myself, this is what I would do:

1- Cartek clutch ~ $700
2- L/T header ~ $1200
3- Stage 2 heads ~ $2750
4- Cam and install kit ~ $750
5- Computer tuning ~ $500

That comes to $5900, give or take. From what I have seen the combo I put together above would make about 425 HP. This guy is claiming quite a bit more than that, what gives?! <img src="images/icons/confused.gif" border="0">

i got a dumb question, did he specify rear wheel horse? or jst say HP and TQ? 425 at the rear would easily be 445 at the crank

Rippie quotes his power like almost any tuner, by the crank HP, not by the RWHP figure. I've also seen on his site that his 382ci stroker package makes 400 rwhp. Hope that figure has improved compared to today's standards!

If you go to his site and check out the package I am talking about it shows a dyno graph. In little letters next to the dyno graph it says, "Note: performance data measured on a chassis dyno at rear wheels."

WTF?!

That setup would probably dyno 380-390rwhp. He is quoting at the flywheel, not the rear wheels.

He, like most tuners, quotes in flywheel hp. But some ppl have seen 440+ rwhp from stock shortblock cars with hydralic cams.

There are some cars running around making over 400 rwhp on the stock heads, so 440+ peak rwhp doesn't seem that extreme in a well sorted out car. I've never seen one run at the track though. There was a 3 page thread about these cars over on LS1.com but it was probably lost recently

does no one notice the graph?

SIMPLE, he quotes Flywheel Numbers. the graph above shows rwhp/rwtq. WELL below 440. end of story.

Ya know, you guys are right. The little graph never does top 400. Thanks for clearing that up for me without setting me completely ablaze.
