Default LS6 intake/tuning dyno gains on H/C!

Hi guys,

Just registered and thought I'd share my results from new additions. Added LS6 intake and MTI LS1-edit tuning to my Stg 1 H/C combo. Dynoed afterwards with the following results;

Before-395rwhp/373rwtq
After -416rwhp/387rwtq

I also have 2 degrees of KR so there's some more gain there. Tony! I need one of your KO boxes!

I'm very happy with the results and the SOTP feel of the new power!

I wonder how much was from the tuning and how much from the intake? I’m still tossing around the idea of an intake, but I don’t have heads. I guess it would help even with just a cam though...

MTI did a great job of tuning my car too.

My best educated guess is 10-15rwhp10rwtq from the intake and 5rwhp/5rwtq from the tuning.

Jayson and MTI rock the LS1 world!!!

Keep in mind that I have a very mild cam: 221/221 .510/.510 116lsa, so with a bigger, more aggressive cam the gains would have been larger.

Hmmmm! Wonder what a Hammer cam would do for me!

Jayson installed the tuning before the dynoes(4 dynoes total). After the first 2 pulls, he checked the car with the Tech 2 and made some adjustments.

3rd pull, the car made 403 rwhp/376rwtq through the Borla capped shut! 4th pull, we opened the cutout(located on I pipe before axle) and got the 416/387 #'s.

Looks like my Borla muffler is now a resriction, might have to switch to the better flowing SLP dual/dual and harvest some of that cutout power for the street.

At 6200 rpms, difference between open vs. closed cutout was 416 to 403 for hp, and 387 to 377 for tq at 4800 rpm. The whole torque curve shifted up 10 ft/lbs. or more from 2500 to 6600 rpm. BTW, all the numbers here are SAE corrected, CF was .96, Temp-67'F, Bar-30.37.

Got to get the car to the track and get some new times as the sig. time is a year old!

Hey Randy, good to see you found the site man! 20 rwhp from an LS6 intake and tuning is badass! I am having some PCM work done tomorrow hopefully, Jayson just got the '98 LS1-EDIT software upgrade.

Hey, could you post the details on that cool inline water pump you have rigged up? Part number, price, source, maybe an installed picture?

Thanks!

My info on the electric inline pump is at home, but I'll dig it out tonight. It's made ny an Australian company called Clark Davies. It was featured in Hot Rod magazine sometime in the summer of 2000. They had a magazine special going for $199, reg. price was $249. Don't know what it's going for now. I think the place I ordered it from was in Chicago, I just called Davies and they referred me to a US distributor.

It cools the engine off very fast when you turn it on while the engine is off, takes only 10-15 minutes to cool engine down completely. This a great for sitting in the staging lanes. Motor is low amperage, only consumes 5-6 amps. A stock battery can run this pump for hours, I know I left it on for 4-5 hours, car started right up.

I'm toying with the idea of turning it around for reverse cooling to see what it might be worth. If nothing else, it's got to be worth a few hp just disabling the stock water pump. I can also show you what belt I've used to go from the crank to the alternator. Belt works okay, only problem is that it stretches after getting on the engine a few times, and it gets a little too loose to use after that.

I'll bring a copy of the Davies pump install instructions to MTI tomorrow for you. What time will you be there?

I have a digital camera, but I'm an internet wus. Don't know how to post pictures yet, maybe you can give me a quick lesson on how to get up to speed with pics.

Good luck with the LS1-edit tuning, I hope you get a truckload of power out of it, and 10's N/A to boot.

What does MTI charge for their LS1 edit tuning?

MTI's LS1 tuning is $500. This may seem pricey, but keep in mind I may pick up some more power as the computer relearns, we ran on the dyno immediately after tuning was installed. Also, I had some KR, after I deal with that there may be some extra hp to show up.

If Tony gets his tuning done, then he will have some tuning only numbers to show you. You can bet that if there is hidden hp, Jayson will find it! You can get more info by calling MTI or e-mailing Jayson directly.

Randy, there is a Dyno-Day tomorrow (Mustangs, woo hoo!) and then Jayson might work on my car. I'd rather do the tuning when nobody is around, too many gawkers get in the way

I'll probably roll up around noon or so.

Would someone check on my car? ;-)
Its the pewter SS that has been there for WAY too long. ARE finally got the redone heads back to MTI and they are gonna built it up next week and do a new dyno-tune.
Pewter SS... "SS 2XS" Texas plate.
Im just hoping for 420 rwhp after dynotune. The 4.11s really apparently hurt my dyno. (nothing like the seized valves tho ;-) )

Thanks,
\chris

Tony, See ya at MTI. I'll bring the info and the TA, so you can look at the pump.

Chris, I'll check on it and see what's up. You have a C5 and a Camaro SS too. Man! Some of you guys have too many toys!!

Pewter SS, I think that's the car the UPS truck backed into.. Just kidding, I saw your car the other day at MTI when I was having some programming done. Aren't you doing the 422 stroker kit. The car is sure sharp looking.

I got 24rwhp from the LS6 intake manifold alone. It all depends on what your tune was before the intake, and how the intake affected it for better/worse after you install it.

Anyways, good numbers. Was that through a full catback?

Jmx, the after numbers I showed at the top of the thread were through the I-pipe cutout(416/387).

The numbers through my capped Borla were (403/377), so it appears my Borla catback is costing me some power now. I could uncap it, but I have ORPs on so it would be loud as heck. I'm considering switching to a SLP Dual Dual to collect some of that power.

I had Hypertech III tuning in before the LS6 intake and tuning. That was removed and the stock tuning put back in, so I may not have gained a darn thing from the LS1-edit tuning. Wait, I don't have anymore SES lighting up my dash! Deleted the cats codes and random misfires. Seriously, I have a baby cam (see above post)in the car, so I would not probably have seen the results you picked up.

I'd have to remove the tuning go back to stock, dyno, and then reinstall the tuning to see the results. Too much cost involved for that. Tony is getting tuning only today, so he will have some results, albeit on a larger motor.

Most of the previous intake installs I've seen results on have been showing about 15rwhp gained. I'm pleased with what I got so far. Once I take care of the KR, then I expect to see slightly more, probably 420rwhp when said and done.

Your gains for intake only are phenomenal, largest I've heard anyway. Perhaps when you changed intakes, you unknowingly removed another restriction, or your LS1 intake was slightly more restrictive than most, hence the whopper of a gain you got.

Thanks for the kudos, now I'm off to the track!

I dont think you'll gain anything by replacing the Borla muffler with a SLP unit. The Borla is a straight through design and weighs muss less. How close to the bend did you place the cutout? Does it dump out the side or straight toward the axle? On my car I found unusally high gains uncapped vs capped - plus 12rwhp and 15rwtq on 286rwhp (basic boltons). My cut-out was in the bend and dumped straight towards the axle. I think the turbulence created by it capped accounted for the large difference. And this may be the problem in your case. If anything I would replace your cutout with a straight pipe and experiment with the plates. If the drone bothers you put some bullets in the ORP. The Borla by design is a shiny adjustable cutout.
