Default Can You Clean The MAF ......

The electronics in the path of air flow is very dirty and I was wondering if it would give false readings. Can it be cleaned safely?

Use an aerosol cleaning agent such as CRC Brakleen or similar residue-free brake cleaner. I've cleaned my MAF a couple times with this method, and it seems to work OK. Just make sure it's dry before you put it back on the car!

Just curious, why is your MAF dirty? Mine was getting dirty because I was (stupidly) running without an air filter at the track. Ordinarily though, this shouldn't be an issue...

The only electronics getting dirty that would affect MAFs performance would be the sensing wire and thats self cleaning, i wouldnt spray anything in MAF, maybe use low pressure comp. air on it anything that doesnt come loose then can just stay there.

I personally wouldn't use brake cleaner, use a can of electrical parts cleaner then hit it with compressed air, just make sure it drys before starting. Excessive dirt build-up can cause the MAF to report inaccuratly.

Ditto what Smokin Joe said. Contact cleaner is the best way to clean it but be very careful with the sensor wires. I've used it with good results. Good Luck!

My GMAF was thowing codes the first time using it at the track.(I bought it used)

ShooterSS Atap'd and cleared the codes.
He suggested CRC QD ELECRONIC CLEANER for the MAF
(THANKS SHOOTER!!!)

After a nice cleaning, I've had no problems since.

You're welcome DooD.

I've used the CRC Electronic Component Cleaner a few times. NO SES and they shine like new.

Be careful what you buy. Many types of contact cleaner have a light lubricant (many contacts slide slightly as they open or close). IMHO, you can't go wrong with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner...zero residue.

I bought radio shack electronic parts cleaner, dabbed a q-tip in it then GENTLY rubbed the sensors until they were nice and silver again.
