Default Which Oil pump and timing set?

What recommendations do you guys have regarding oil pumps ad timing sets.

I understand most pumps are just ported factory pumps, is there a completely newly designed pump and if so has there been much sucess with it?

As far as timing sets, there are a few double roller sets out there but I am not looking to do alot of fabrication unless there is significant justification for it.

Any suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated, especially from any engine builders out there.

thanks in advance

Texas Speed has the best prices on LS6 oil pumps (ported and shimmed) that i've seen on the internet, they also have very good prices on timing sets.

alot of people just get LS2 timing chains, they cost about $25-35,... but i got an adjustable timing set so that i could degree my camshaft.

Has there been any problems using the stock f-body oil pan with these ported and shimmed pumps? They aren't sucking the pan dry at 7000rpms are they?

I'm going w/ an LS2 chain and the GM chain damper for my Z06 when I put my G5-X2 in. The LS2 is far beefier than my stock chain and it's been fine for 70k and over 30 HPDEs.

For oil... LS4 pump baby... cheap and high output. Should perform great w/ my oil cooler in and when the oil gets thinner as it heats up.

You just replace the chain and not the sprockets.

katech offers a replacement chain also. you use your factory sprockets. they say it's used on the c5r race car and to their knowledge, none of these chains have ever failed. i'm thinking they are $100 or a little more though.

No... it's a single roller... but beefier w/ thicker links.

does it require modifying the cover or is it a drop in setup?

i got the double roller and ported ls6, but after all the hassle of it i would of much rather gone with a ls2 with new sprockets and ported my own pump(wich i ended up doing anyway).. the double roller isn't bad if you have done it a few times and have access to phillips machine screws. but i think the ls2 chain would be plenty. all it's turning is the cam. not like the older chevy's.

Im running just fine with a home ported and shimmed LS6 pump and an LS2 timing chain. Less than 100 bucks for it all. What kind of setup are you running?

eventually it will be a 383 , as of now 233/239 cam 1.8 shaft rockers, but I want to buzz it to 7000+ k if I can as I await the funds for the 383. Stability is key here I feel but as I am making a hybrid setup I am not looking for anymore fabrication than I have already filled my plate with.

If the melling drops in with no problems then I would be interested in going that route just for the extra volume and pressure, but if it screws with the chain then I would not think it such a hot Idea

Did you change the cam sprocket with the ls2 chain?

melling is a direct replacement, drops right in. the jp performance timing set is to, and comes with the proper shims to clear block surface and the oil pump.
