Default HELP!! Is my engine FUBAR???

I am getting some blow- by out of the breather on the valve cover and if I remove the oil fill cap and rev the motor it will puff out of the filler.

I have seen this before on my vortech blown Impala SS and it was the tell tail sign that my engine was fubar!!!

I have not sprayed the car or ran a blower on it. I recently had it dyno tuned and it put down 374 to the wheels. I have boltons and a 218/224/114 comp cam.

Is my engine FUBAR??? Is it the rings? or could it be the valve guides or valves? Thanks.

mine did the same thing when i put a hole in the piston, you A)cracked a ring land B)toasted a pitons C)valve problems, easiest thing (in this order) is do a compression test, on the cyl. that arnt good pull the valve cover and check valve train, maybe you got lucky and messed up a push rod, but you got alot of blowby , to me that indicates piston or ring land, but hey ive been wrong befor, good luck

Yep, I figured it could be a cracked piston, but I have no idea how it could have cracked. Ya I am hard on the car, but I have never force fed it. It has not been pinging or ratteling at all either. I don't think it ever has ratteled. What could have caused it???? It never over heated either.

I hooked up the PCV again today and now it does not appear to be puffing. When I remove the oil fill cap, it has a lot of vacuum on it. Is this normal? What do you guys think? How can I really tell if it is messed up? Thanks
Brad

Either do a compression test or drive it until it breaks.

I have seen this before. Your engine is toast! If you hurry, you can still by my engine

I had the PCV blocked off on the intake, and the hoses off the valve covers were vented to the air with a K&N on the end of the hose.

It does not smoke out the tail pipe under ACCELERATION, but will under DECELLERATION. I disconnected the PCV because it was sucking oil and making smoke. However, it still smokes a little.

that is your problem, you need the PCV to help prevent ring flutter under decel. I would hook back up your PCV and maybe add another PCV valve to it.
Cheers,
Chris

Chris,
thanks for the reply. That is interesting. Can you explain a little more? I am asssuming that you have a PCV on yours, how are you keeping from sucking oil out the valve covers? I was thinking about relocating the PCV to the top of the oil fill cap to get it out of the line of the oil.
Thanks

Smoking on decel because you have crankcase pressure. We all do.

I tried running just the LS6 pcv system and it ended up being too much crankcase pressure. I am running a breather on the driver's side and half of the passenger side pcv system. Not ideally what I want but I am assembling parts to the evac kit.

Hey John,
did/do you ever have smoke/steam/stuff comming out of either breather? That is my biggest concern. I will be bringing it in for warrantee soon so I will have them run the necessary tests. If the engine needs to come appart, it will be put back together with ported and polished heads and a new cam.

Franco said that the rings are often stuck because of the nast carbon deposits on the tops of the cylinder and in the combustion chamber.

My ARE motor does not do that. Brad, you know the symptoms of a cracked ring from your LT1 SC days. I'd have to see it.

Yes the Impala brings back many unfond memories.

That is why I am so concerned about the puffing valve cover. I will be bringing it in soon.
