smoke out the oil filler cap:(
My ls1(2001 w/ 12k miles) is using oil. About 1qt for every 1k miles. It just started doing it 1k ago or so. I haven't done the pcv mod. I let the motor run with the oil filler cap off and could see some faint smoke coming out of it. I could only see it b/c I looked but thought this usually meant the rings were shot. Anybody else? The car runs rich also, but i don't see the smoke being fromt aht. Not sure. Looking for input. Thanks.

Re: smoke out the oil filler cap:(
Is it possible that the smoke is actually steam?
Steam is bad, but smoke is worse.
Your car is new enough that the TSB for bad rings should apply to you. Get it to the dealer and they should replace your rings under warranty.
Does anyone have the TSB handy for Joe?

Well...if steam is a possibility it is more likely steam. I took a nice big whiff of it and it didn't smell bad like burnt oil. What would that mean? Don't say coolant int he oil
Car runs 100% as good as always. Would headers be a problem getting this warrantied normally?

AHHHH, you might have the "Big Mike" syndrome. Back in September 2001 I was at the track and on 2 of my passes the oil dipstick was forced out of the tube and spewed oil all over the engine. When I let the car sit at idle with the dipstick out, she was puffing white smoke like hell! Week later I took her in for a leakdown test Not good, the rings on the #3 and #5 were pulverized and failed with 80%+ leakdown.

Wow. It's not that bad. It's very minor. I can barely see the smoke. In fact, just now int eh dark with only a flashlight me and my friend couldn't see it at all. Still worried about it though. ! qt per mile seems like alot too.

Re: smoke out the oil filler cap:(
just take it to the dealer and do the rings!! that's how mine started , very light smke ....then it got worse ...and wors ... and now i have a 6.0 engine being put in!!!
just like a freind of mine says" it won't fix itself, and it could only get worse!"
fix it while you are under the heavenly blanket of the warranty!!

i would have a leak down check performed on the motor first. that would tell you if its excess blowby that you are encountering.

Yea...I'm gonna call the dealer and see if the headers void the warranty. If so, I'm just gonna buy another shortblock and have it on hold. thanks

Re: smoke out the oil filler cap:(
Yeah, if there isnt too much of it, its ok. Mine has always done this and it hardly uses any oil. You can especially see it during an oil change when you pour in the new oil, it forces the smoke out. Its especially noticeable when the weather is cold. Theres lots of moisture buildup too, so some is steam.
