Rust on the dipstick and precipitation under the oil fill cap...wtf??
Last week, I changed my oil...I noticed two small places on my dipstick with rust on them....at the very top and about 6 inches down. I cleaned it off with a small wire toothbrush. There was also a few drops of water under the oil fill cap, along with watery oil....the real light brown lookin stuff . That water oil was also present in the two filters and overflow canister from my pcv mod too.
I replaced the filters and overfill canister from the pcv mod, changed the oil, cleaned the rust....checked the old oil, it looked fine.
well today I was out messing with it, and checked on all these things.....again, small water droplets under the oil fill cap, rust back on the dipstick, and watery oil in the filters and overflow canister of my pcv mod.
I have a FTRA that I never close off......and it has rained since my oil change last week, but I've had the FTRA on for almost 8 months now, and I never saw any of this before....
does anyone have this problem, fix, and/or cause.
thanks

I think it's header/manifold heat causing this, I have had alot of LS1's in the shop with blistering oil dip stick tubes with the paint flaking off in the same area you are seeing it on the dipstick itself. Good luck!

yeah, just a lil' bit....at the very top of it. ther's a littlebit, and about 6 inches below it, is another small patch.
but yeah....the oil coming out of the plug, and the filter looked fine. just like it always looked at my 3-4K oil change.
not that it matters but I use Mobil1 full synthetic 5w-30, with the mobile1 filter.

I used Mobil1 when it first came out many years ago. My prized 1969 Judge (which I am the original owner of) developed internal rust even on the crank bearing journals! Turned out that the condensation caused by occasional use of the vehicle and not reaching full operating temps didnt allow the condensation to dry out and caused RUST!!!!. Needless to say, I NEVER use Mobil1 for anything but a daily driver which has a normal temp thermostat in it.

I dont do a whole lot of short trip driving, and in the winter months, my oil fill cap drips water when I take it off. No rust on the dipstick, but I've seen it on other cars around here. I think that steam hits the cool oil fill cap and condenses on it. This does not happen to me in the summer.

you probably live in the snowbelt. sounds like moisture condensing in your crankcase from short hops to work/parts/beerstore. make sure you have a clean crankcase breather filter and go for a nice drive up on the freeway for an hour or so every other weekend.

I had this problem back in the early 70's on a muscle car when usually everyone vented to atmosphere. Can be caused by a number of things including a low temp stat, venting to atmosphere/non functioning or bad PCV system, cold weather, short trips, etc.

Weasel, the rust on your stick is from condensation in motor, all motors have condensation, driving conditions and habits are responsible for this showing up and you shouldnt be overly concerned. Come to think of it your pcv mods can be contributing to this. You shouldnt confuse this as a symptom of a bigger problem like a leaky head gasket, IMO.

Your pcv is clogged or restricted. Clean it out to get some crankcase ventilation. Had this situation on my GMC pickup a few years ago.

Re: Rust on the dipstick and precipitation under the oil fill cap...wtf??
Condensation on the fill cap is VERY common for vehicles used for many short trips/hauls. This is not an oil specific issue, as suggested about Mobile 1, but extremely dependent on the motor not only reaching operating temperature, but remaining there for a while.
The rust could be due to a poor coating or such on the manufacturers part, as I believe they go through a plating process before being sent for GM assembly.
