another vote for mobile 1. but any synthetic is the same. there cant be too much difference if you're using a synthetic.

I loved Mobil 1 but my engine made lots of weird ticking sounds and sounded bad on cold startups. I switched to Royal Purple and it sounds like a brand new engine.

RP for me!

Mobil 1 in my Formula.
I think my Nova might start getting synthetic as well, but waiting for the new motor first (current 6 year study eats a quart every 500-1000 miles)

Mobil 1 here, 70,000 miles and no problems...I also run about a bottle of N2O every two weeks through it just to clean it out.

Wow!

thanks for the overwheming response guys! I guess I should've switched to synthetic motor oils sooner

I think I'll go with Mobil One Synth from now on

Thanks again to all who responded

Mobil 1 in my '99 Z28 and my wife's '96 Jimmy SLT. The mother-in-law's '91 Escort doesn't get it, though!

Go with the masses if you wish. I've used Mobil 1 before, but am not using it anymore. Castrol Dino oil works fine for me.

Lets look at it another way. From the sounds of your post, you're getting a shop to do your oil changes. Synthetic is running you AT LEAST double the cost over dino oil. Is it going to make your engine last twice as long? If your engine is fine to 150,000 miles with dino oil, how long will it last with synthetic? 200,000 miles? So you're paying all that extra for what, 50,000 miles?

The other side of the coin is that synthetic will last longer and require less frequent changes. Quite possibly that's true, but your filter still gets dirty just as quickly. Full dirty filter = dirty oil.

I used 10W40 I'm not that brand loyal. I used Castrol pretty frequently.

Synthetic takes longer to break down.

But I change my oil every 2000 miles. Sometimes less. Sometimes 1500. I think that a car that gets raced 2-4 times a month should be getting new oil on a very frequent basis.

I picked up a 89 GMC Jimmy 4X4 with 90k on it for a beater and to trick out for the woods. I put a 3 inch lift...big tires and beat the hell out of it. As soon as I got it I started putting the Valvoline synthetic in it. It’s got 230k+ on the clock and runs just as good as the day I got it.

I changed to the Mobil 1 after i got my Z. The mobil 1 is now in my Z (37k), my Jimmy (230k), and my Wife's Blazer (100k)

Any questions???

I'm with PSJ on this one. I run regular old Valvoline 5W-30 with an AC Delco filter, and do frequent oil changes. I don't AX or RR, so my motor doesn't see consistent high RPM uses (which heats up the oil). I dragrace, but that is a limited duration burst of RPMs that won't break down the conventional oil as quickly.

I think the herd mentality has kicked in a little too hard on Mobil 1. Yes, if you AX or RR (which requires high RPM for an extended period of time), you should run M1. Also, if you run FI with a shared oil system, I'd run M1. But if it's your daily driver, why??? As long as you change it every 2k-3k miles, your motor won't be any worse for wear. The whole sales pitch (originally) behind M1 was that you could go 10k miles between oil changes - because it didn't break down as fast... but it still gets just as dirty as conventional by lifting the contaminants out of the motor.

FWIW, I run Valvoline 10W-30 in my beater car (88 MX6). It's got 175k on it and still going fine.

I ran M1 in my 94Z for years, still do, but in my LS1, I'm changing fluids on that thing so often it seems, that it makes no sense to dump $20-$25 worth of oil in the thing, only to drain it a few weeks later... Same deal with tranny fluid. I run AC Delco Dexron III. Anything more expensive, and you're just pissing money away...

It's a total waste of money. Look at it this way: Say you change your oil every 3000 miles, and put 100k miles on the car. The cost of using Mobile1 vs. cheap oil is ~$500 extra. That's enough money to buy all new engine bearings and then some.

Ok, I see the points made against using synthetic Motor oil - save some $$$, not really needed for basically just a daily driver.

.....I guess other than the economic factor, you can't go wrong with either synthetic or traditional motor oil as long as you change your oil on a regular basis.

To me, (as I stated in an earlier post) choosing to go with synthetic motor oil is a small extra price to pay for peace of mind.

Thanks again for all the responses

my consumption was more with Mobil 1 than Valvoline Synpower.

standard 10W40 valvoline as seemed to be the best in my engine as far as consumption from the brands I tried

The difference in cash becomes a lot cheaper if you factor in that with synthetic you could extend the intervals to 5 or 6k, so the price difference isn't as much that way. I'd never push more than 3k with dino oil, but I feel totally comfortable going 5-6k with synthetic.

For instance, let's use a 100k scenario. You'll do 34 oil changes if you use dino every 3k, and it will cost you a total of about $408 (that's figuring a 6 quarts of dino times $1.50 plus a $3 oil filter) If you use synthetic at $4.25 a quart, plus that $3 filter, you'll do 17 oil changes in 100k, for a total of $485. Not a big difference in price for much better protection.

And take it one step further. A lot of people prefer to use the better $10 oil filters, so if you substitute that into my above equation, the price difference is actually cheaper for synthetic!

A dino oil change then costs $19 each, times 34 changes, which is $646.

The synthetic oil change then costs $35.50 each, times 17, which totals out to $603.50.

I would suggest getting synthetic right away. When my car hit 500 miles, I went up the road and got my oil changed to castrol GTX with a penzoil filter and 1,000 miles later, I just changed the oil to royal purple with a ac delco ultraguard gold filter and I was amazed at my results! I can tell a huge seat of the pants difference, almost as much as my direct flo!! So either royal purple is actually that much better or castrol GTX sucks, that's just my experience

My oil cosumption went up with Mobil 1 10w-30. I am switching to Royal Purple or Amsoil now. I have heard from others that their consumption went way down.
