Mobil 1 Synthetic - worth the cost?
Hello all,
I just had my oil changed and decided to go with Mobil 1 sythetic rather than "normal" premium motor oil.
I had never used sythethic motor oil before and was wondering if it was worth it to pay for the extra "protection" synthetic motor oil allegedly gives your motor.
Any / all opinions requested
Thanks in advance,

Valvoline or Mobil 1 here, depending on what's on sale at the time. I figure you can't go wrong with the stuff GM puts in the pan at the factory (well, for Corvettes anyway).

Hey Bradster, There was someone here that did their own test at home but I cant remember who did it. They found thet Mobil1 held up better than most others did. Maybe they'll chime in.

I currently use Mobil 1 but I think any good synthetic oil is worth it.

I guess 5 out of 5 positive responses settles it
Resolved: synthetic motor oils couldn't hurt and is a small extra price to pay for peace of mind.
Thanks for feedback, guys

I use Mobil 1 too. No problems and I feel good knowing it's in there. Only thing is the oil (even dino oil)gets black really fast in my car. Not sure if anyone else's oil does too?
I have a used '98Z with 27,000 miles. A4, 2.73 gears, flowmaster exhaust.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic - worth the cost?
It mainly depends on how you drive the car. If you track it, yes, get the synthetic. Reason for this is the LS1 runs HOT on track. Hot meaning 280-300+ degree oil temps! Standard oil doesn't offer the same protection as full synthetic at thee temps. This is one of the reasons GM will void a C5 vettes engine warranty if there isn't synthetic in there.
But if your oil temp doesn't get that hot, why bother unless you want to change the oil less often.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic - worth the cost?
Here's some first hand info from my experience of Mobil 1.
I've used Mobil 1 in my S-10 since new. As of today, it has 184K miles on it. In the summer I use 5-30 and winter 10-30. I change oil every 10,000 miles.
I have yet to use a drop of oil in this truck. Even though I change oil every 10K, drive the hell out of it, the motor runs great.
Nothing beats a GM drivetrain.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic - worth the cost?
I have always used Mobil 1. I put 100k on a fresh 400 in my 77 T/A without a problem. I changed the heads/cam at 100k (was running 11:1) and the engine looked like new inside. Put another 20k on it before I sold..Nothing short of an NHRA dragster could have been run harder than that car

I use the Special Synthetic Race blend of Royal Purple - it's worked great @ the track and on the dyno!

Oops did I say Royal Purple - I meant 10W-30 barrel oil works fine for me, I keep the extra $20 in my pocket and spend it on booze.
