HELP!!! have 2 rounded off rocker bolts

well if they are rounded off I would try to tap a metric 7.5mm on the end of the bolt. It's takes an 8mm so a 7.5 should be able to be tapped on. I have heard of this but I have never rounded one off yet.
Which ones are stuck? You might have to drill it and use an ez out...if it is the front cylinders. Maybe you can get a small pair of vice grips in there. If all else fails you could probably get a grinder/dremel and take the head of the bolts off and pull the rocker, then use a pair of vice grips.
Also, make sure the valves you are trying to loosen are in the fully closed position to take any load off of the rocker bolt. This will also help you loosen them.

If you have a welder you can also weld a bolt or nut on top of the stripped head and put your wrench on that. The #2 is real easy to get to. The #6 would be hard to get an ez out to work because you have to drill them. Although the socket style bolt removers may work, I do not know if they will fit down in the rocker where the bolt head is recessed.
If he doesn't know what a 6pt. is chances are he used the 12pt. first and rounded the corners off before trying the 6pt. The underside of the bolt head face is locktited to the face of the bolt tower. It takes a lot more force to break the locktite than the torque value of the bolt. Drilling the bolt? That's a recipe for disaster in this case. Time for some heavy duty vice grips on the ones that are rounded off. Give it a nice hard quick snap and the locktite will break loose which is what you should done in the first place with a 6pt. socket on a 3/8 drive breaker bar. Then you can turn the bolts out with your finger. You should have ask this question BEFORE you rounded the bolt heads off. The Craftsman tool would probably work too, but having that around would only give him an excuse to take shortcuts again in the future. Better to do it right the first time and not have rat yourself out by asking a question such as this. A 6pt. 3/8 drive 8mm socket from SnapOn will cost you just under $10, but it's money well spent.

I rounded a rocker arm bolt before when my socket cracked. I used the Craftsman bolt extractor kit and it worked really well. While I was at Sears I picked up an 8mm impact socket and that solved the problem of cracking another socket on those bolts.

it got rounded off when the 6 pt broke fyi.


is there any way to get them off? all the other ones came out fine.
