Broke 918 spring!
Well I finally tore down my car to find the broken spring on the #1 cylender . It made no loud noise at idle. It Just had a rough idle, loss of power, flashing ses light and a p0300 code. hopefully I don't have a bent valve. Oh well new springs comming!

Re: Broke 918 spring!
It's the 224 cam with 114ls. I only have a little over 3000 miles on the new engine and I'm at stock rev limiter. I cannot tell you exactly when it happened, but I have a feeling it happened at the track when my clutch slipped and I nailed the rev limiter. I have yet to hear of anyone else having problems with these springs...mabey it was just a bad spring. Oh well; you got to pay to play!

Re: Broke 918 spring!
I've had the 918's with my Thunder 224 114lsa on for about 4500 miles now. I've hit my 6800 rev limiter probably 5 times now and I'm still running okay. I have the stock retainers.

So you had no noise what so ever? Wow, I have the same cam only it the 112 lsa, I rev it up to 6000 r's often, and I missed a shift once but not to bad. I think that I might have to pull my covers and see whats going on in there, I am suprised that you didn't notice it prior to pulling the valve coves, and you are also lucky that nice little valve didn't feeling like dropping down and going for an expensive ride

Sucks, first time I've heard of a 918 breaking. All the more glad I went with the larger double springs.

WITH my TR-224 cam and my old Comp 212/218 cam and haven't had a single break yet! should i knock on wood? hmm...

WOW! I'm sad to hear about this I thought the 918s were going to be the "wonder springs"...
Were you using the 772 ti retainers or stock?

Re: Broke 918 spring!
i still think the 918s are the best option out there for a single spring. they will be on my new heads
I have the 941s currently been running them for I would say over 40k miles maybe 50k. no problems

Re: Broke 918 spring!
wow...are we going to have a rash of problems with 918s now???
I'm glad I spent the $$$ for a double conversion, but I thought the 918 was the key

Re: Broke 918 spring!
I bought a set of 918s and 772 retainers back in December for a cam that I still haven’t installed. Hope they don’t break...

I think those springs are only good up to .525 lift or so. Most of us have a lot more lift than that...

The 2002 springs will take more lift than that, the 2002 LS6 cam is 0.551/0.547

Re: Broke 918 spring!
Wow, the first 918 spring to break Generally broken springs are due to incorrect application or incorrect installation. I know a LOT of 941 springs broke because the retainers didn't fit them properly.. Some people don't pay enough attention when installing springs, and get them seated a little crooked, and they break. There's a lot of reasons springs break, and the last one is from the material itself failing.
I'm running 26915's with my CC 221/227 .561/.569 114 since last June (over 13k miles so far) with a 7000 RPM rev limit, and all is well so far! (knocking on wood I did the install right!)

Re: Broke 918 spring!
I truly think that it was just a bumb spring. That is why I ordered more 918's to replace the broke one. So far I am the only one to break one...that I have heard of. So that alone should tell you that their doing pretty well. It could have been alot worse. Later
