Default Results with new MMS Stage 2heads/224 cam and other mods...new TC recommendations?

Greetings to one and all. I am relatively new to this forum and I have seen so many posts and threads in the last couple of months that have been VERY useful in trying to figure out what mods to get while building my week-end racer. My NA '01 c5 is very close to where I want it to be (11's)so I thought I'd post some fresh results.

Previous mods: BPP ram-air, power-duct w/coupler, TB coolant by-pass, B&B tri flos (now exchanged for LT headers), Bassani x-pipe, Corsa Indy's, 3.42 gears, ProTorque 2400 (was great compromise for street but I now realize that it needs to be replaced with a higher stall - it can't handle new horsepower gains), ET Streets and skinnies.

With the above I was able to achieve the following:

296.8 rwhp
339.0 max torque
Best e.t. = 12.67
Best mph = 108.80
Best 60' = 1.80

New mods: MMS Stage 2 heads and 224 v3.1 cam, Comp 'R' lifters, MMS ported oil pump, ASP under-drive, Granatelli MAF, BBK throttle body, LT headers, 160 thermostat, TR55 plugs, MSD 8.5 wires

With the new mods obtained the following results:

380.3 rwhp
356.1 max torque
Best e.t. = 12.22
Best mph = 113.14
Best 60' = 1.84 (mostly driver error!)

The only differences in conditions were that the same track was about 10 degrees higher in temp. today than prior best and there was about a 12 mph cross/headwind (Carlsbad usually has a nice tail breeze but not today).

Overall, I am DELIGHTED with the gains in horsepower/torque and e.t. - particularly since I am running such a wimpy TC!

Mike predicted after the dyno that I would be just a couple of tenths away from the 11's and that the only thing in the way is my converter. I couldn't agree more.

I know that for many of you, these numbers may not mean much as most of you are running in the 11's and 10's but this is the fastest car I have ever owned and I can't believe what it is doing and that it is capable of still more!

So, anybody got ideas for a torque converter that might get me into the high 11's but also still be STREETABLE - this isn't a trailer queen - it's my daily driver. I just want an 11 second NA street machine. (Yeah, I know, when I hit the 11's I will get even more of "the fever" and start looking for NOS systems but for now I wanna do it all on motor only).

Anybody have other ideas to get me into the 11's?

Again, many, many thanks to all on this list for any assistance you can offer. Actually, you guys have already offered lots of good stuff! <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Oh yeah, and before I forget - special thanks to Nineball for letting me know that MMS was right in my own back-yard! <img src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" border="0" alt="[hail]" /> Tony!

I would go with the sy3500.It pulls on the top end plus it will give you more bottom end but wont kill you on the launch and I believe Mike can make it tighter for your car by raising str a little bit.

I see that you're running ET Streets. With that in mind, I'd go with something that hits harder than the SY3500. I had one in my '98 T/A was back when, and it's an AWESOME street converter. It's really efficient, and I could ALWAYS holeshot guys from a stoplight since it wouldn't roast the tires. However, at the track, my 60' times were definitely slower than I wanted. It's more of a compromise with that converter for street traction.
Both Yank and Vigilante make some nice converters for your car. I don't have any experience with the smaller Yank converters. The smallest one I ever ran was the SY3500, and I only went with bigger ones from there. I know that for Vigilantes, I would go with either the Vig 2800 or 3200. My personal pick would be the 3200. I'm running this converter in my SS, and the streetability is GREAT. It will be very streetable in your car with the 3.42:1 gears you're running, and it will perform VERY well at the track! This converter is flashing right around 3,700-3,800 RPM in my car. The Vig converters are a somewhat underrated for the LS1's, but don't let that scare you. The Vig 3200 is the BEST street/strip converter that P.I. makes. I've put 7,000 miles on mine since last August with absolutely no problems. It will work really well with your heads/cam setup, too, since you'll be much closer to your peak TQ when launching than you are now with the PT2400. It will also keep you further in your powerband throughout the 1/4.
Give Jack or Terry a call at Precision Industries if you'd like to discuss their converters further. Their # is (901)466-0267.

I'd go with an ST3500 or PI3200 rpm stall. Both have good street mannors and will really knock some time off your ET.

You can really get those times down if you get that 60 down...maybe a good rear and some et streets will solve that problem....nittos or more for the bolt on cars....when you do a cam or heads they start to turn into street tires again.. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

From the C5 guys that I personally know w/ 10 and 11-second timeslips, they haven't done anything w/ the rearend. The C5 has IRS, not a live axle like the f-body, so there isn't a beefier unit to swap like there are w/ 12-bolt and 9" rearends. I've seen quite a few fast M6 guys break half shafts at the track when trying to hook up on some stickies. The A4's will most likely get away with more since you can load the suspension prior to launch. This is how the A4 f-body guys can cut 1.5 60' times on a stock 10-bolt. As for the FLP level IV, that's their HD 4L60E transmission. I HIGHLY recommend it; you're going to need a built unit eventually. They're the only prepped 4L60E out there that's proven in high HP and quick (10-second) cars. Chuck Johnson does the trans builds at FLP, and he can answer all of your questions. transguy@sprynet.com or (630)820-9294 Also, when you do install the "fatter" converter, it would be best to also install a trans cooler at the same time. The looser converters will build more heat, and heat kills transmissions. A B&M 19,000 GVW or 24,000 GVW will work just fine. I know that Thunder Racing sells trans coolers. They're around $50 or so, and they're cheap insurance.

A better converter will definitely get you in the 11s. Normally I would jump on the higher STR and Stall bandwagon for a H&C car with ET Streets. However, even with ET streets, there may be some advantage to the lower STR with 3.42 gears in a vette given the IRS. The SY 3500 will definitely hook easier on the street too.

If you are still concerned about drivability, you might also consider the Yank C-5 3200 or the PI 2800. Both will get you 11s.

Great feedback from all of you - please keep it coming!

Also, FYI, race weight was 3440 lbs. (yeah, driver needs to go on a diet!) <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

After the converter, are there ANY other mods anybody can think of for performance or reliability? I know that once I get into the 11's that parts can start breaking.

I really like Trevor's idea about the FLP tranny. I will also follow-up on this on Monday.

After these (and a roll-cage) are there any small mods that might give a couple of added ponies here or there?

Any thoughts on cut-outs (have LT headers, x-pipe, and Corsa Indy mufflers). What about placement of cut-outs and what about the remote control kind? Normally I will be running in the ET Street class and so I have to use a closed exhaust system, but I really want to hear what this motor actually sounds like w/o exhaust restricts! <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

No idea/mod is too small for me to consider.

Thanks Trevor. You bet I'll mention your name!

Also, any thoughts on suspension changes that might help in weight transfer?

Diesel (sorry - don't know your first name):
Yes, these ARE great numbers and the SOTP feeling at WOT is nothing short of awesome.

Booker, Terry, and Trevor: I know that you guys are pointing me exactly in the direction I need to go. So far I am leaning towards the Vig but I don't know what stall to get so I am going to give PI a call on Monday as well. Thanks for their number.

Bigbos: right you are on the 60 foots. Is there another rear-end available for the c5 or should I consider an FLP stage 4? Something like that?

Mike and Wayne: thanks to you and everyone else for the congrats! "Happy" doesn't come close to how I feel about this motor - more like ELATED, EUPHORIC, STOKED (Ha, just aged myself with that one!) <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

So guys, now that you've helped me narrow down the converter choices what else should I be considering?

I've noticed that the f-bodies definitely seem to transfer weight at launch while the c5's don't seem to? What might help on the suspension side of things that is actually proven to work on the c5's?

As always, any and all help is GREATLY appreciated! <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

I'm not really familiar w/ the particulars of the C5 suspension setup. I do know that a set of front Hal QA1 adjustable shocks would make a big difference, but I don't know if Hal has any that work on the C5. I would recommend posting up in the Corvette section. Godspeed has a '99 FRC, and I bet he would have some good suggestions.

Hi Joel - I just KNEW that I forgot to put something in my previous post of new mods! Yep, I do have an ASP under-drive pulley.

I am a complete idiot (but willing to learn) about ATAP. I did ask Mike about the A/F and it is running right at 13.2

Any thoughts?

I didn't see an underdrive pully listed, do you have one of those installed?

Have you auto tapped the car to see if its running rich or getting any knock retard?

They do indeed. It's the ticket if you don't want to hassle with a coil over setup. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Trevor, are those C5s breaking half shafts or output shafts (not the tranny output shaft but the axle shaft inside the diff that the half shaft slips onto)? There are hardened output shafts readily available and having the rear pulled for the TC is a great time to put them in. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">
