Default Those with custom pistons, ring stack??

It's about time to order the new slugs for my motor. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Looking at a 6.125 rod, stock stroke, .01 over on the bore (factory service hone dimensions), about 10cc dish, and stock deck clreance. Should put me right around 8.9:1 depending on the final cc on the heads.

should give me about 1.29 compression height, but....

Question is the ring stack <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

What have people gone with when having pistons made?

This motor is gonna see as much boost as the head gaskets will take. My stock pistons look really good for the amount of abuse i've hit them with. No ring land damage, and no scuffing anywhere. Even the bearings look great.

Drop the first ring down?

run the metric stack?

something else?

Nick A, got any recommendations?? <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

When ordering your Pistons explain to then exacly what you are doing.. there are very good at helping to setup the pistons. you have plenty of C/H too do what ever you want.

They were absolutely no help. The response was, "Uhhh, i don't know. Nobody makes rings for the LS1." <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I know that's not the case, plus i think the quy never heard of file to fit.

I'm looking for general ideas here. Old SBC, ford, etc. What are/were people doing for boost

Got any straight pushrods laying around after the tear down. Maybe I will have to go and look at your progress.

Soldering in Harlanland. Give a call, it's been a dramatic week.

What piston company are you talking to? I have had good luck with CP pistons on some other custom projects - you might give them a call.

(949) 567-9000

As to specifics you will definitely go with a thicker land, etc. As to the rest it's really going to depend on the specifics of the setup - boost levels, cylinder pressure, etc. I would also suggest talking to both the piston manufacturer and the engine builder (many times they will know who to talk to to get sensible answers).

Need to call JE and Ross yet.

I am the engine builder, that's why i'm asking <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Boost = 15+ or whatever the heads will take <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Diamond I have used for some mopar stuff (dodge magnum engine) - have had good luck with them, though I like CP better.

JE stuff is great and almost always near the top.

I am not a big Ross fan - though they do seem to have gotten better in the past few years.

Wiseco makes great stuff also, and is up there with JE.

Really in the end all the big names are great, it's who will work with you the best for your application. You might also try BME - bill miller - I don't know if they have done any LS1 stuff though (never talked to them about it). (775)887-1299.

My first choice would be CP, then probably BME or JE or Wiseco, then Diamond, then Ross <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Harlan,

Here's the spec's Nick got for me on my Ross pistons (same bore you're talking about). My pins are ofsett slightly though for a zero deck height.

It's actually my build sheet from my pistons. These have a slightly lowered top ring and the pins are .006 higher to provide zero deck height.
