I hear a lot of people talking about it but I'm not sure if I know what to listen for? every LS1 I have ever heard seems to make some sort of ticking, clicking, ETC... but what does piston slap sound like?

You can hear it with the windows up while idling or taking off. My 99 camaro SS had it when cold. My 99 vette did not have it. Guess its hit and miss.

My 99 has it but it isnt very loud at all... it can be heard outside of the car and maybe with the windows down but I have never been able to notice it with the windows up...
I don't really know how to explain the sound.... it sounds like a "tapp" comming from the motor...... allow the motor to idle cold and listen for a "tapping" sound..... I noticed it after washing my car one evening.
Maybe I helped you and maybe you can find it... I am not too worried about it since it hasn't affectd the performance of my car nor is any smoke present

It depends on the intensity or amount of clearance between the piston and cylinder bore as to whether or not you hear it with the windows up. I can hear mine with the windows up at initial start-up or after it sat a few hours. It's colder up here in Wisconsin. The piston slap sounds like a slap Ok, I'm being a smart ***. It has a hollow rap to it. Some what like rod knock but hollow sounding. It can make noise at idle, and when you think it is gone, put it in gear (load) and accelerate and the noise will reappear. It will go away after the engine warms up except in extreme cases. I used a 1978 wrecker with a 454 (years ago)and that had the worst piston slap I ever heard. I suppose the bigger the piston the louder also.

Go here to hear my car and what dealers say is piston slap even though I seem to think it's lifter or overboar. Pontiac promises a fix but if it was overboar, doesn't the fix need to be a new LS1? I'm getting so pissed off, I've contacted Pontiac like 6 times and nothing ever happens!! They just say a fix will be out in January and now they say April. Now they are sending me stuff on arbitration with them and the BBB. I want it fixed, not talked about. I think it's getting to the point where a lawyer needs to step in.
Both clips are on a fully warmed up car
