The LS1 oil pump is very meaty and quite durable. I don't think it is very common for them to fail, however, the pickup can get cloged or the pickup o-ring damaged.

You have to remove the front timing cover to access the pump, which is quite time consuming.

Actually, depending on the year, your oil pump may or may not be reliable. With the 1998 to 2000 cars there were issues with the oil pump failing.

You can purchase an aftermarket oil pump, or a later year oil pump, for about 170-200.

Replacing the oil pump is pretty much a total pain in the ***. Here is a link that will give you a general idea of what is invovled.

I have been paranoid about the oil pressure in my '99 T/A for a while now. When cold the car will idle just below 40PSI and under throttle it will rise to almost 60. But when warm at idle it is now dropping to just above 20. I called a tech this morning and he says that the normal operatign range is from 15-70 PSI for a '99 T/A. he also realyed that at 15PSI the engine was in no jeopardy of being damaged??? Is this true? My '94 Cavalier will never drop below 40 and pegs itself at 80 when cold under throttle. The thing that is bothering me is that there seems to be a downward trend in my oil pressure. The other day it was spiratically floating between 20 and 40???
Plese give me your input.

TIA,
-Nick

I would opt for a new pump then nick. that low of a pressure at idle is a clue that the relief is somewhat trying to stick. Once it fully sticks, say good bye to all oil pressure and hello to a tow truck <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

My personal experience with the oil pressure relief valve sticking is that there is NO WARNING. One day oil pressure looks normal on the gauge, and on the next start up there is ZERO pressure.

you know i just thought of something. it is old school, but how about putting a manual oil pump guage on it? what i am trying to say here is how about a bad sending unit? that can screw up oil pressure and fuel pressure as well! just a thought.

Nap: ADJ, pronunciation: Na-P DEF: To go to sleep for a short period of time after glass of milk and grahm crakers
LS1tech speak for NAP: ADJ, pronucitation: Na-P
Def: Pushing up daisy's, crapped out, tit's up, totaled, went to heaven, wasted, gondies, buh-bye, dead, no good, worthless, broken.
Word is usually followed by numerous explatives by refered said parts owner.
