i think its just z06 specific stuff, not 100 percent sure on that tho.

Re: Do 2002 LS1's have black coated pistons?? In late 2001 Ls1 andLs6 got new pistons with polymer anti friction coating, and tighter piston to bore clearance to quiet cold piston knock. Re: Do 2002 LS1's have black coated pistons?? Here is a link to the 2002 Z06 information. On the 4th page(I think) there is talk of the piston changes. As mentioned above, the change was in April of model year 2001 on ALL LS1 and LS6 engines.
