Default Lifter Guide wear...

While doing some cam work on my car I noticed at twenty thousand miles the lifter guides had worn to the point that the lifter was very loose in the guide letting the lifter to turn a degree or so and if a cam change was tried with the spin it over method you would loose the lifter into the pan. A call to the dealership and four new guides were bought for a little over ten bucks.

Guys for ten dollars any time you have the heads off replace the guides. If I had done that the last time I had the cam out it would have saved me from having to remove the heads this time.

Ten dollars for guides verses ninety bucks for headgaskets.

You could have just used magnets rather than removing the heads.

Anyways, I noticed the same thing. 20k miles and 4 cams later my guides are looser than a whor..er..well, they are loose.

Also, when putting those new plastic guides in, DO NOT TIGHTEN THAT BOLT DOWN HARD. You *will* strip the threads out of it at what feels like 15lbft. Very weak threads.

They were loose at 20K? Damn, that makes me a little leary about putting a cam in without removing the heads. Yeah, I could do the magnet method and risk magnetizing the lifters...I thought I've seen guys on here put cams in at 70k and the lifters "stuck".

I think mine were loose by 20k because I've had so many cams in the car with higher than stock lift, and I've taken it to 6800rpms a lot. Probably have had 10k miles of >0.550" lift on them.

Even still, only 2 of my 16 lifters wouldnt stay up.

I just bought the magnets from AutoZone and they cost me about $2 a peice. That is very cheep insurance if you ask me. I have done several cam changes and they work like a charm.
