I have a 99' T/A A4 and am wondering with no heads, what is the biggest or most valuable cam I can install without a lope.... Trying to keep it quiet....
TIA,
Jason

I'll be you could see some decent gains with something along the lines of Comp's new XE-R lobes with specs around 218/218 (I don't know what kind of valve lift #'s they offer in those grinds). However, it's hard to say whether it would be worthwhile or not to install a very small cam w/stock heads...
Weren't some folks having decent luck with the ZO6 cams?

Your exhaust setup will have alot to do with lope and loudness. Hell, the stock cam will lope some through open headers. If you are running cats and a quite catback (Corsa maybe?), you might be able to get away with a B1 cam.

Like exhaust loudness, Idle speed has a lot to do with a sleeper cam. If you plan to raise your idle speed through programming, the TR 220 cam on a 114 LSA will sound stock at an idle of 850 - 900 rpm.
I have a 226/226 114 on the Comp XE-R lobes and the cam is very hard to detect at 900 - 950 idle.
If you will keep your idle speed down around 650 - 700 then a 212/214 115 will be stealthy.
do you have a high stall converter? an 850 idle on a stock converter would make the car pull at stops.

Yeah, I forgot to mention idle speed... Bump it up just a tad through programming, and most cams will be much less "pronounced." My old 220/224 Comp Cam was barely noticeable @ 975rpm idle.

LS1Edit is only $550 (not $650). The really nice thing is that it will grow with you. Later down the road, if you make minor/major changes, you can program for them yourself without having to send the computer back out for someone else to do it.
That's not to say that everyone should dive right in and start programming thier own PCM's. You could cause a lot of damage if you aren't careful...
Will you need programming? It's hard to say. If you want to keep a stock like idle, it may require raising your idle speed a tad. You may want to raise the rev limiter and change shiftpoints as well. A cam swap usually will change your powerband some, and you'll want to be able to get the most out of it by reprogramming the PCM accordingly.

I was gonna say if you had the SLP dual dual System, you could Run a B1 or a TR 220 (114) cam and it would sound pretty damn close to stock!! That SLP system is AWESOME for "sleeper" cars.

Bumping idle up with a cam swap, is it possible to do this without programming? My 2001 m6 seems to just adjust iac counts to bring idle back to 800rpm, no matter what you do, anyone have an answer to this problem? I tried idle relearn procedure, no real progress.
