Default Hammer cam is in!

I installed the hammer cam on a 112 LSA, Comp 918 valve springs, and MTI hardened push rods tonite in my '01 Z28 (Still have the stock heads). The whole job took about 7-1/2 hours. After everything was done, I hit the ignition and the car fired up immediately. To get it to idle properly we drilled out the throttle body to 13/64" and bent the TB tab just a little to bring the RPM's up to around 700-750. Who said you couldn't run a 112 LSA cam with no tuning?? The car idles great with absolutely no tuning!!

Took her for a test spin. It pulls real hard and smooth all the way to 6400 RPM. You can really feel the car pull very strong in the upper RPM's. I need LS1 edit to be able to bump the rev limiter up to 6800 RPM and adjust my shift points to 6600 RPM. I have the idle set around 700-750 RPM. So far, no codes.

I am hoping to make it to HRP on Wednesday night if the air is halfway decent to see what kind of ET improvement I have gotten with the hammer cam. I am hoping for some 11.50's or if I'm real lucky some 11.40's.

A big thanks goes out to MTI. Jayson, Jeff, Patrick, and Mike for hooking me up on the cam, Comp 918 springs, and MTI hardened pushrods. You guys are the absolute best, and should be commended for having the best R&D, expertise, customer service, and parts inventory. My hat is off to you guys!!

Also a big thanks goes out to Steve350 and Raughammer for helping with the install. A job like that sure makes you appreciate having friends that are willing to help out and give you a hand when a hand is needed!

I'll post the results from HRP if I run tomorrow night.

John,

The hammer cam I am using is the .566 lift. Good luck with your car. You have some really impressive times. Mods are in the sig. (all times before the cam install).

I didn't realize that you could get different lifts for the Hammer cam.

Congrats Matt. Your car sure sounded good as 700 RPM. To hear both yours and Steve's Hammer cammed cars idling at the same time was just stereophonic music!

Our maiden voyage to "test" out the cam last night was killer, just wish we could have found a suitable victim would have presented himself during our, *cough*, "testing".

Hammer Cam (C1) Specs 222/222 .566/.566 XE lobes

Hammer2 Cam (C2) Specs 224/224 .581/.581 XE-R lobes

Again, congrats on the "job well done" Matt.

Good job Matt! That car has come a long way in a short time, are you trying to catch up with years of hard work that we have done on these cars? LOL!

Oh I get it, let your racing buddies do all the experimenting first and set the path, then come from behind and buy an LS1 and take the easy way out. Hahaha! Damn Mustang guys.

Wow, if you got it to idle that easily in an A4 then I may have to think about a 112 again. I wonder why other A4 guys have such a hard time with that and you didn't?

He, He, He, Tony. What can I say. I guess you would consider me "smart". I listened to too many of you LS1 guys and everything you guys said made too much sense. So here I am. I am VERY satisfied with having made the decision to go the LS1 route. If I had it to do all over again I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for all of your help.

Bravo,

One of the biggest advantages IMO about hammer cam on a 112 LSA is the fact that you have to rev the motor about 200 RPM less than that of a 114 LSA. In the long run, it should buy you some time on your stock short block.

Knowing you, I doubt you keep a stock anything in that motor for very long. LOL!

That has got to be some kind of record for a cam install in a drive way. I think I can change springs in my sleep. Thanks to MTI for the idea on the spring tool. It is amazing how easy it is to do a cam change on these cars. Look out Tony and John, here we come. .
Let me know how it does tonight Matt.

Good Luck

Steve? your not coming? bummer. I really wanted to see how y'all two hammer camed cars did against each other.

I hope you change your mind and decide to come out.

I just swapped back to the LS6 manifold and have been out there grinding on my calipers.

Getting ready, .... the wife and son will be out there. The cameras battery is all charged up.

Good luck everybody!

Is your idle at 700-750 in P or D? If it's in Park, how does it idle when you shift into D? Also, how long do yall think the 918 springs will last with that lift, will it be reliable? I'm considering that cam now and need info.

Hey John how is the emissions on the C1 and C2 cams? I still need to pass. I might just stick to the B1.

The lever style compressor is available from most auto parts tool suppliers.

Paul, to get the car at TDC, take off the timing chain cover and align the two timing marks on the cam and crankshaft (cam at 6 o'clock, and crank at 12 o'clock). To air up the cylinder properly to prevent the valves from falling down into the cylinder you need to have a male fitting on the end of the hose the same as a spark plug thread. Screw it into the spark plug hole. Connect the other end to your air hose, and that pressures up the cylinder and keeps the valves from falling into it.
