valve spring question....real technical q's

Default valve spring question....real technical q's

on my ls1 heads i wanna run a double spring...but while at the machine shop they opened up the spring pockets for the bigger springs...and all of them feel like the walls are paper thin...and on one they broke though....SO I NEED SOME HELP...this was done on an spare head so i need to get some help on what double springs i can run and how big they have to open up the spring pockets??would it be any different on the ls6 castings??

can some one help??

My old school Chevy head answer would be to lay a .030" shim on head(or thicker) and cut pockets like that, if that leaves spring not enough installed height(too much pressure) than you would have to use longer valves or retainers?keepers that would give more installed height. It would be wiser to use double spring that will fit in inst. height with shimmed seat cut though..

Call MTI and ask them which double spring they are using. Why do you want to go double? A 918 wont work for you? One thing about doubles is that some are too strong for stock hyd. lifters and they'll collapse.

I am running Comp 987 springs.

I ran a set of 977 doubles before but they are kind of tall.
